6 - Hinton News Tues. Dec. 28, 1993 Red Sulphur Area News Kathy Harris, Reporter Red Sulphur Springs Home Extension Club Meetb With a crisp fall morning, sun rays beaming, and leaves in brillant colors helping to get the Red Sulphur Club members in the mood for their workshop. Each club member had brought everything from pine cones, acorns, tinsel burs, in order to make fall wreaths to hang in their home bringing the fall colors indoors. Kathy Harris, president, welcomed the club members and guest at 9:00 a.m. A time of devotions began with a nsing.a-long of action songs to help get the kirks out and heart pump- ing. Mrs. Harris shared some ex- cerpts from a book she had read entitled =What You Can Do When Life Falls Apart Pack Up Your Glee•ass in a Great Big Box. Then Sit on the Lid and Laugh.' = Author Barbara Johnson had faced 8o many dilemmasin life ass wife and mother. Facing sad times as well as the good times. Scriptures was taken from Isaiah 40-31 with preyer closing the devotions. Mrs. Harris also taught the lesson of the month entitled "Getting Your Financial Papers in Order." The objectives of the lesson was to understand Why keeping records is important and where they need to be kept for sake keeping and easyaccees. Also, identifying the type of records and individual/family needs to keep. Discussion began after the ladies were asked to an swer some questions and then check their an- swers to see if their record keeping system needed updated. The ladies were asked to get their wallets and see if they had the important pa- • per•, I.D., and medical information they might need to carry with them. Lots ofchildrens and grandchildren• pictures, outdated coupons, and many other items of interest but of little use were found tucked in their wallets, Alot of fun as the ladies shared their collections but they .understood more about the informa- tion they needed to have after the lesson. The fall wreath project was under way after the lesson with Karen Hedges and Cheryl Howdock shar- ing ideas and a samplelnaie by Mrs.Hodges. The hot glue guns were plugged up and the creative juices began to flow. After a couple of hours the ladies had produced their own creations. Each wreath was unique and beautiful in the falls colors to add warmth to their homes. Bag lunches were enjoyed as the ladies rested from their work. The members of the Red Sulphur Springs Home Extension have taken the McDonald House at Roanoke, Va. as a project. Boxes will be placed at Ballard Stores for donations for this worth while project. The McDonald House provides lodging and three meals a day plus laundry facilities for people who have a family member in the hospital. Items needed are paper supplies, zip lock bags, kleenex, paper towels, toilet paper, etc. Anyone that would like to contribute may do so at the above locations. Benedum Foundation Gives Concord Quarter i Million Dollars An early Christmas present is arriving at Concord College. Concord President Jerry Beasley announced Tues. (Dec. 21) that the Claude Worthington Benedum Foun- dation is awarding a $250,000 grant to help the College meet the year- end deadline for its Bonnet Scholars endownment. The Coreila and Ber- tram F. Bonnet Foundation will provide a five-to-one match for gifts pledged to support Concord's Ben- her Scholars Program. The Benedum gift puts Concord over the $750,000 goal set by the Bonner Foundation for the end of Dec. Another $250,000 is required by Sept. 30, 1994, The Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation was estab- lishedin 1944 by Michael and Sarah Benedum, both W. Vs. natives, as a memorial to their only child, Claude, who died while serving in the First World War. In 1992, the foundation authorized grants totaling $6,646,012in the areas of education, health and human services, commu- nity development, and the arts. Miehasl Benedum's directive upon his death in 1959 was that the foun- dation 'help people help themsels." Through the Bonner Scholars Pro- gram, four-year •€haler=hips are awarded to Concord students in return for a commitment to become involved in community service for ten or more hours weekly during the academic year, plus a minimum of 240 hours in the summer. Most of the work is based in W. Vs. The Benedum Foundation specifi. cally supports projects located in W. Va. and the area around Pittsburgh, where the foundation is headquar- tered. Concord anticipates forging partnerships with other W. Va. groups receiving Benedum funds, said Dr. Ben•lay. "We will be mindful of the faith shown by the Benedum Foundation as we seek to put Bonner Scholars to work for the benefit of West Virgini- ans. a Dr. Be•slay said. sour grati- tude goes to the trustees and the staff of the Foundation for sharing our vision of community service."
