Spreading Christmas Cheer Recently Brownie Troop #2152 visited the Hinton House to spread some Christmas Cheer. They donated homemade childsize aprons along with colorful mixing bowls and spoons to the Headstart Program in Summers County. Mr. Bud Johnson was a guest speaker for the twenty-one troop members and Hinton House resi- dents present. He gave a warm pres- entation of his own Christmas Tra- ditions as a child; walking outto the woods to select the perfect tree to chop down, creating homemade ornaments, and peering through the windows of the old Davis Dept. Store to see the latest toy selection. Mr. Johnson's speech fullfllled one ofthe requirements for these girl scouts to IN THE LIBRARY • It seems this past fall has been full of bad news and crisis as far as the Library is concerned. Out literacy grant was not renewed putting our much needed LAMP program in jeopardy. Although this community wa0 more than generous last year in its support of the Library, much of the money given was channeled into the endownment fund leaving the "i operating fund short of cash and we have never quite caught up. Bills have gone unpaid, the Library Board has talked about cutting hours, etc. and made a special appeal to community leaders for help. Now it's Dec. and things are looking up". We have been awarded a Thanks A Million grant which will help keep out literacy program going through June. We have received a small but very welcome grant from the Ezra Jack Keats Foundation to operate our story hour program, LAF. (This is a real honor since it is the second consecutive year - they don't like TO give these to the same people two years in a row). Lots of generous folks came through with some financial help and we didn't have to close the doors and turn offthe lights, at least not yet. We were honored to hear the Messiah performed in the Presbyterian Church. We are indebted to the Presbyterians for Bponsoring such a wonderful and beautiful event. What with the proceeds from the ads sold in the program book and the Sarah Long offering taken up during the performance, the Friends of the Library Charles McCauley, Jr. added $2400 to the Library's much need reserves. Ole Inchyhas managed TO worm hiB way past the $8,000 mark - he needs to climb to the $20,000 Mr. & Mrs. Jackie Lee Cales F, naacement mark if the Library is to continue to operate full time through the rest of Richmond Cales -- -- the year. = Announced Not only have we received financial help, we have received donated books as well.
