Protect Yourself With The (NAPS)--Ifyou or someone you care about is among the estimated 150 mil- lion women who'll have a urinary tract infection (UTI) this year, you may be re- lieved to .know that cranberry juice may be a nutritional approach to help avoid the infection in the first place. "l'he Problem Approximately 60 percent of women will experience a UTI in their lifetimes and one in four will suffer a recurrence within six months. UTIs are typically treated with pre- scribed antibiotics; however, antibiot- ic resistance--when bacteria stop re- sponding to the drugs designed to kill them--is possibly the single most im- portant infectious disease threat people face today. In fact, each year, more than two mil- lion Americans are infected by germs that are resistant to antibiotics and at least 23,000 people die as a result. According to an omnibus survey conducted by KRC of 1,000 Americans, nine in 10 adults understand that over- using antibiotics can be harmful to one's health. So what's the alternative? An Answer Thankfully, there is ~ small, nutri- ent-dense fruit that can ,help defend your body against UTIs. ,The ~best part? You don't need a prescription for it. It's the cranberry. "More than 50 years of well-docu- mented research points to cranberries' unique ability to block certain bad bacteria:' said Dr. Christina Khoo, Di- rector of Global Health Sciences and Regulatory Affairs at Ocean Spray. "This makes cranberries one delicious option that may help prevent urinary tract infections7 Dr. Khoo notes that the key to avoiding the infection altogether is consuming an eight-ounce glass of cranberry juice daily. People shouldn't wait until they have a UTI to drink The Fall Season of activities for the "Lighthouse Beams" youth group of the Pence Springs Community Church began with our group participating in the Walk for Her Lifetime in Bellepoint on October 1st. We had a special reason for walking this year. One of our own (Kassi Hedrick Coleman) is a breast cancer survivor. She was there to walk with us. We raised $1600.00 and once again we brought home the trophy. On October 29th we had our annual hayride, driven by Chuck Barker. Everyone boarded the wagon at the church and after a prayer by Pastor Roger the ride was on. Some of our people stayed behind to prepare for the party afterwards. Renee Kounse and Betty Garten went after the pizzas and the Stewarts prepared a pifiata for the children. When the wagon returned we had the judging of the costumes. The winners are: Prettiest: Arabella Parkin & Sarah Canterbury, Ugliest: Gavin? (visitor) & Jacob Canterbury. Most time to prepare: Oliva Presley and Most Biblical: Bethany. Parkin Phyllis Wylde & Renee Kounse took care of the prizes and the loot bags. Betty Garten, Bob Cales, and Gale Keatley ran the fish pond. Oct. 30th was our shoe box day. We had 39 this year. Thank you to all who prepared them! On November 6th we started Christmas play practice. That lasted until the play, Dec. 18th. November 19th was our church family Thanksgiving dinner. We met in the basement and had the blessing and The Statler Hotel in Buffalo, New York, built in 1904, was the first hotel in the United States tohave running water ancl a pnh~ bath in each room. Power Of Cranberry Juice Photo Cranberry juice is more than a re- freshing drink--it may also improve the quality of life for women who suffer from UTIs. cranberry juice, because once the symptoms start, they'll likely need a course of antibiotics. According to that same omnibus survey, consuming cranberry juice daily shouldn't be a problem--three-quarters of adults would rather drink a glass of cranberry juice a day than take antibiot- ics a few times a year. At a time when antibiotic resistance threatens public health around the world, research shows that consumi/~g cranberry juice daily can be' a nutritional approach to reducing symptomatic UTIs and, as a result, may be a useful way to decrease the worldwide use of antibiotics. So it seems cranberry juice is more than a refreshing drink--it may also improve the quality of life for women who suffer from UTIs by reducing their trips to the doctor, their lab costs and antibiotic use. We were blessed with a lot of visitors and that was nice if you came, please Thankfully there was hot chili and pizza and all kinds of good food back at our church. Also a the church was a bunch of people waiting to surprise our Pastor (Roger Persinger) with a birthday party for his 70th birthday! He received many cards and nice gifts. He also received cards from many people he knows from all over the county. If you sent one, thanks for helping us make his day special. Bob Cales had a little talk before the blessing and also asked for other to say things they wished to say to or about Pastor Roger. Many nice things were said and we hope he had a great day. Our last event for the year was our annual Christmas play December 18th @ 7:00 p.m. The title was ~Come to Bethlehem and see!" The church was full and weather co- operated to let us go on and have it. We had fun preparing the play and we hope that all who attended enjoyed it. Our goal was to celebrate Jesus, the very best gift was ever given and to get the story told to those who may not know the true meaning of Christmas. Now as we close the year 2016 we would like to say "Happy New Year" to everyone and if you don't have a home church, you are welcome to come worship with us. Our church is located above the Country Roads Store in Pence Springs. Tues.
