Have you consid- ered humidity's role in this eff- orl ? High humidity makes our lye, dies hold heat. Anyone who has lived through a summer in West Virginia knows, how diff- icult it is to get comfortable on a humid day, even if the temp- erature isn't unusually high. Dry air absorbs moisture from the skin and produces a chilling effect. This helps ex- plain why mothers fret when their children work up a sweat playing outside in cool weather and take off an outer gar- ment. The clothing next to their bodies is damp from perspir- ation and cools quickly when the sweater or coat is removed. Buck back to in-the-house humidity. The pan of water can be kept on top of space heaters like wood and coal stoves, which are coming back into use. House plants also help inc- rease humidity by giving off moisture. A few hanging bask- ets and a few potted plants scattered around could help cut your heating bill. Just remember, with higher humidity you will be comfort- able with a lower temperature and save energy too. . .DON'T OVERFEED HOUSE PLANTS -- When house plants begin to show signs of poor performance or dying, the first reaction of many homeowners is to fertilize them.'
