6 - Hinton News Tues. Dec. 17, 1991 TO VISIT HINTON LODGE 821 Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Grand Exalted Ruler, Hen. Lester C. Hess, Jr., to pay official visit to Hinton Lodge 821, on Dec. 21st. Lester C. Hess, Jr. was born on Mar. 3, 1940, in Wheeling, W.Va. This populous County Seat combines the easy-going rural atmosphere of its home state with the urban tem- pos of its industrial cousins Oh. and Penn., located less than a dozen miles to the west and east. Brother Ted wears his hometown's pleasant, soft. spoken manner on top of a =True Grit" spirit of integrity and compe. tence forged through years of hard work and accomplishment. Follow- ing graduation from high school in Wheeling as President of his class, Yearbook Editor, Captain of both the school and All-Conference bas- ketball tea.ms, he attended Vander- bilt University in Nashville, Tenn., on a Dew-Jones scholarship from 1958 to 1962, graduating with a major in English. Degree in hand, Hess headed north to Cinn. where he spent the summer as a city desk intern at the Post & Times Star Newspaper before starting the fall term at Bay City, MicZigan High School as an English teacher and basketball coach. The summer of 1963 Ted was again drawn to jour- nalism as a staffwriter for UPI in its Nashville, Knoxville, Memphis, Charleston and Birmingham offices, with his headline stories on the era's racial tensions and civil rights being read throughout North and South America and across the European continent. In the fall he entered WVU's Col- lege of Law, and in addition to earn- ing his legal education, also served as Associate Editor of the W.Va. Law Review prior to graduation in 1966. From that time until the present, the name Lester C. Hess, Jr. ha§ been recognized in his profession as a conscientious and skilled legal practitioner, amply qualified even in the U.S. Supreme Court. During the same period he compiled an exemplary record of service to his own community as one of its most active citizens. Inspiring and accom- panyinghim since 1966 has been his lovely wife, Becky, the former Re- becca Sue Eades, noteworthy in her own right as a high school teacher in Va., Oh. and W.Va. Paralleling his prominence as a jurist and involved citizen has been Brother Ted's quarter-century as an outstanding and dedicated Elk, fol- lowing his initiation into Wheeling Lodge No. 28 on Oct. 23,1965, under the sponsorship of his father, PER and Ritual Coach, Lester C. Hess, Sr. In 1968 he was appointed Inner Guard, progressing through all the chairs until election and service as Lodge No. 28's Exalted Ruler in 1974- 75. He is a member of the Lodge's Youth Activities Committee, recog- nized for over a decade as the best program in W.Va.
