HOLD ANNUAL MEETING
The WNa. Farm Bureau, the
state's largest organization of farm-
ers and rural people, held its 72nd
annual meeting Nov. 10-12 at the
Beckley Hylton Hotel and Confer-
ence Center, Beckley, WV.
The highlight of the meeting was
the keynote address by American
Farm Bureau Federation President
Dean Kleckner. K]eckner addressed
the 330 attendees to the banquet on
Men. evening.
Kleckner congratulated W.Va.
Farm Bureau on its tremendous
membership growth this year. "To
me', Kleckner said, "increasing
membership numbers show that
Farm Bureau is still the voice of
agriculture. We are there to he] p the
rural Americans do together that
which they cannot do alone."
The President reminded us that
our policies aim to achieve two basic
goals. The first is to improve net
farm income and the second is to
improve the quality of rural life.
Farm Bureau has never been more
influential, yet we have never faced
tougher issues.
On the national level, the wet-
lands issue has been the center of
dates for listing. W.Va. already has
18 species listed with another 100 on
the candidate list.
Kleckner then spoke of an issue
which directly impacts our wealth,
our property, and perhaps is even
more dangerous than the wetlands
issues. =Washington spenders are
out of control, and the budget deal
cut by Congress was a political fast
shuttle and is a failure", Kleckner
said.
While many proposals are under
consideration, the AFBF president
emphasized that we have no coher-
ent policy for fiscal reform and na-
tional distrust and distrust for those
we elect is growing. "The fiasco of
bounced checks and unpaid restau-
rant bills, plus the fact that Con-
gress passes so-called public inter-
est laws, but exempts themselves.
Kleckner pointed out that all
spending programs must be exam-
ined, and that farm programs have
been cut from $26 billion to less than
$10 billion in six years.
By comparison, over 60% of the
federal budget has been left un-
touched, and last year every dollar
collected under the so-called-budget
clared a noxious weed, as well as
making Autumn Olive a noxious
weed statewide, that the deer herd
be reduced in the state by allowing
anterless deer to be taken during
the regular deer season, and that
farmers be exempt from the Dept. of
Transportation Motor Carrier regu-
lati'ons, providing that they do not
travel more than 150 air miles from
the farm and that the farm vehicle
not have a gross vehicle weight rat-
ing or a gross combination weight
rating in excess of 26,000 Ibs.
Attending the meeting from
Summers Co. were: Mr. and Mrs.
Carl Amick, Mr. and Mrs. E.Z.
Edwards, and Mr. and Mrs. W.E.
Halstead.
