Program End of Season Summary
Our 2003 basketball program saw
the fielding of 4 youth teams (1 girls
15 under and 3 boy's, 16 & 17 & 19
under). The 19 under boy's squad
began at the end of the school term
(June), and were very competitive.
We are thankful a number of our
payers will be attending various
colleges this fall, which include W'V.
U Tech, Potomac St. of WV U and
NJ. Comm. College.
: This broadened program has been
most gratifying in that we are
bginning to see more participation
from our local youth and some from
sUrrounding counties as well. As in
the past, we (the BUCS) wish to
acknowledge the ongoing support of
this our home community.
'We would like to thank all the
kind folks who contributed their
time and resources to our efforts.
Remembering our volunteers,
coaches and parents who give of
their patience and time to be in
proximity of our youth. Thank you!!!
We would also like to offer a
special thank you to those local
cdn'tbutors who are so important
tq our annual program.
As follows ...
Hinton Area Foundation, Oak
Hill Sanitation, State Farm Ins.,
Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors,
Elks Club, Cam & Fields Hutchens,
Massey Inc. Co., R & R Foods, Inc.,
Bill & Becky Ellison, Ricardo &
Elizabeth Gore. We would also like
to thank all the adult and youth
volunteers who made our 6th.
annual fundraising basketball
tourney "Summers Co. Classic" a
great success.
This year's teams saw some
complications as concerns
scheduling which affected out
youth's readiness. The girls team
was the most disrupted. However,
they did attend one local tourney in
Beckley, which saw them place
among the top teams attending and
had several tune-up games with
area teams scheduled. They then
attended a national AAU
tournament in Hampton Beach, VA.,
where they won 2 games of 7. While
this was a valuable experience , we
hope to offer more comprehensive
schedule that would include many
more games, which would better
prepare them for such a high profile
tournament. Overall the girls posted
a 6 & 8 season.
Our boy's were moderately
successful with the 16 U team
posting a 2&2 record at a single
tourney (all of these youth also play
on. the 17U team). Our 17U team
played in two State Tourneys (AAU
& YBOA) and two practice tourneys
(Martinsville, VA. & Summers
Classic) where they posted a 3 & 12
record. As our team is manned by
mostly 16 yr. olds, we were not
distressed by this record. We are
encouraged by the number of games
we competed closely in. This is also
great experience for our young
players, which we hope will serve
them well in the upcoming season.
Go Cats!l!!
In addition, our 19 u team saw a
record of 5 wins & 6 losses while
attending 3 tourneys. Germantown
MD., Best of the Best Basketball
Tourney (Placed 2nd.), Roanoke,
VA., was also a 2nd. place finish. To
end the season, our team attended
tl!e "Jr. Men's Nat. Basketball
Tourney" in Jacksonville, Fla. At this
outing our team posted a 1-3 record
with a win over California and a very
close h)ss to a Tennessee team that
took a 3rd. place finish. Our other
two losses were to Louisiana (2nd.)
and Washington DC (4th.).
This year's program saw the
addition or our 3 on 3+1 Basketball
tournament, held during the "WV
Water Festival," which was staged
at the newly renovated Bluestone
Dam Little League Park (Big
Thanks to J. Whittaker) and proved
to be a huge success. Thank you, R.
Wilson and the WV Water Festival
Committee for your support. We look
forward to repeating this event in
2004.
We, the BUCS wish to encourage
our youth to seek and set goals while
attempting to maintain their
academics and improve on their
sport endeavors. As for the adults of
our community, please find your
interests and get involved with our
youth. The rewards are great for
both the youth and concerned
adults. We Salute you Summers Co.
Thank you very much ... "Brothers
