Christmas is approaching with ( what seems to me to be) the
speed of light. Fortunately, the Library has a large selection of
books to help folks get ready. They are full of helpful advice about
such things as what to cook and how, how to make decorations and
gifts ( Christmas with Southern Living 1984 and Vogue Christmas
are two of this type that are new this year! ) or they help us "get in
the spirit" by retelling some of the old favorite Christmas stories.
Silent Night brings to life the words of the famous Christmas carol
through the illustrations of Susan Jefferies. We also have a new
copy of Valentine Davies Miracle on 34th Street. We'll put these
~.~" new.one,on display alemg with the "old', o~ tormake them ea~er~
to find during this busy, busy season.
Other new books include Jeffrey Archer's current best seller
First Among Equals, The Leopard Hunts in Darkness by the
popular Wilbur Smith ( who wrote the Delta Decision), a new sci fi
called The Years of the City by Frederick Pohl and Machine
Dreams, a novel by Jayne Anne Phillips set in a small town in West
Virginia. On our non - fiction shelves we now have Exile, The
Unquiet Oblivion of Richard M. Nixon by Robert Sam Anson.
Don't forget the movies this Friday ( Dec. 14). They are The
Maltese Falcon starring Humphery Bogart as Sam Spade "hard -
boiled detective" and A Night at the Opera with the Marx
Brothers. The movies start at 7:30 and ( of course) they are free.
One final note.. The Friends of the Library still have copies of
Judge Miller's The History of Summers County ($35) and Hinton
Historic and Architectural Survey ($10) on sale. They make
excellent Christmas gifts for anyone with any interest in the history
of this area.
