Meeting Held
Dewey Lester of Jumping Branch, reasons, growth of our agricultural
WV represented Southern States experts has slowed •ignificantly,
Cooperative's members at the aeso-
ciation's 61st annual stockholders'
meeting in Richmond, Va., Nov. 14 -
15.
Also attending the session was
Autrey Retch, Mgr., of F & R Supply,
Inc. local Southern States retail
dealer (s).
They heard Gone A. James, the co
- op's president and chief executive
officer, report that total dollar
volume for the 1983 - 84 fiscal year
reached $607.5 million, an increase
of 8.6 percent over the previous
year.
"It was a year of recovery, even
though the economic environment
for agricultural has remained tea-
uous, James said. " Not only did
Southern States achieve its •econd
highest dollar volume in hi•tory -
exceeded only in 1980-81 - but it also
strengthened its position to be of still
greater service to farmers, well into
the future.
"Must of the divisions and prod-
uet lines showed gains. This was not
at all unexpected, because of the
PIK program, the summer drought
and other problems that soured 1962
. ~J'
James also reported that " the
consensus is that uncertainty lies
ahead for agriculture. We do not
expect to see the rapid growth of the
1970s repeated. For well known
and we see nothing on the horizon
that indicates any new fast growth
that can be sustained."
James told the delegates assem-
bled from five •tates that net
earning• ( after taxes) reached $10.5
million a• compared to $'2.7 last
year. " The level of earnings was
sufficient for a patronage refund of
, one - half percent," he said.
Feed tonnage was up a dramatic
97,485 tons to 574,500 tons, com-
pared with 477,000 tons last year.
Fertilizer volume reached 692,000
tons compared with 651,000 tons for
1982 - 83.
Petroleum sale• volume totals•a.
$188 million, up from $175.2 million
the year before. Gable•age increas-
ed from 197,332,000 to 224,580,000 this
past year.
Seed •ales reached an all time
high of $27.2 million a• compared
with $22.9 million the previous year:
Total farm •upply volume.~-
creased slightly from $11~t,-/~illio
the year before to $109.~illion.
Grain marketing vo~e stood at
$112.5 million as co~)ared to $117.1
million the year before. Bushels
handled were 26,017,000 million as
compared to 34,170,000 the previous
year. While volume was down the
grain marketing dive•ion •till
managed to operate in the black.

frequently during the winter

fection, and a• such, warrants our
special attention because a fatal
children's disease is associated with
it. The disease, Reye's Syndrome,
affects children from infancy th-
rough adolescence and can develop 3
to 5 day• after the onset of the
chicken pox,' an upper respiratory
illness, or other viral infections. It
affects the liver and brain, is non -
contagious and is often mS•diagno-
sed a• encephaliti•, meningitis,
diabetes, poisoning, drug overdose,

After a viral infection has seem-

a•pirin with Reye's Syndrome, pat-
ients should consult their phy•ician
.before using these drugs. Watch for
these symptoms, usually occuring in
the• order:
PERSISTENT OR CONTINUOUS
VOMITING
LISTLESSNESS ( LOSS OF PEP
AND ENERGY, DROWSINESS)
PERSONALITY CHANGE ( SUCH.
AS IRRITABILITY,
COMBATIVENESS OR SLURRED
SPEECH)
DISORIENTATION ( UNABLE TO
IDENTIFY WHEREABOUTS, OR
FAMILY MEMBERS)
DELIRIUM, CONVULSIONS
A child's life can depend on ~,{ly
diagno•i•. Reye's Syndrome she hid
be suspected in any child w~
chicken pox who vomits repeatedly~.,
Phone your physician immediately
if these symptoms develop and tell
him you suspect Reye'• Syndrome.
If your doctor is not available take
your child to an emergency room
promptly. Two liver function tests
can be done to determine the
possibility of Reye's Syndrome.
There i• a 90 per cent chance of
recovery when the •yndrome is
treated in its earliest stages by
physician• and nurses experienced
in the treatment of Reye's.
Epidemiologic re••arch has
• hewn an association between the
development of Reye's Syndrome
and the use of aspirin for treat-
ing the symptoms of influenza - like
illnesses, chicken pox, and {colds.
The U.S. Surgeon General, the Food
and Drug Administration and the,
Center• for Disease Control re.
commended that aspirin and com-
bination products containing aspirin
not given to children 18 years of age
and under during episodes of these
illnesses.
