The late Dr. J. W. Stokes has been
named the 1984 member of the
West Virginia Public Health Hall of
Fame.
James William Stokes was born~
i September 16, 1896 in Springfield,
South Carolina, the son of George
Edw~m~d Camilla Albertine Elwell
Stokes. Being the son of a Methodist
minister, he followed in the footsteps
of his father and enrolled in the
ministry at Walford College in South
Carolina. After three years in the
ministry, he changed his field to
medicine and enrolled in Valdebelt
College, where he graduated with
his office for treatment, he would
maybe charge a "couple of dollars".
Due to Dr. Stokes not charging his
patients, his family experienced a
Christmas without money. His wife
went to some of his patients and
asked that they render some pay-
ment for her husband's services,
just so her children could have a
Christmas. It was during this time
that Dr. Stokes divided his small
office into two rooms, one side
served his private practice, while
the other side he used to give
children in the county immuniza-
tions against communicable disea-
ses. This small divided room was

Hinton High School has been
awarded a $570 mini-grant from the
West Virginia' EduCation Fund. The
money has been awarded to Mrs.
Connie Newton, English teacher,
who will use the fundb to publish the
Kaleidoscope, the l~nton High
School literary magazii . Students
in grades 7 - 12 will submit their
original writing for the publication
between now and March.
The publication will be the fourth
volume of Kaleidoscope, but in past
funding has been totally dependent
on advertising and business contri-
butions. Most recently, the magaz-
ine has had little community sup-
port, and without the mini - grant, it
possibly would not have been pub-
lished this year.
Mrs. Newton, who is also Sum-
mers County Director of the West
Virginia Writing Project, emphas-
ized, " This is a student public-
ation that permits our talented
young authors to see their writing
and artwork printed." This year
many teachers are expected to
Wtlcipate in submitting student
work. All faculty members have
been asked to screen their student's
and submit some selections
each of their classes. The
mini-grant is designed to pay for a

student authors were published.
• Members of Mrs. Newton's Ad-
vanced Composition classes will
serve as the staff for the school
publication. Each class will be
responsible for designing, selecting,
typing, and producing one section of
the magazine. Upon completion of
the staff's work, the publication
must be sent to a professional
printer for publishing.
According to Mrs. Newton, " We
would have liked to have worked
through our local vocational school
for production, as they do in some
neighboring counties in order to
bring down the costs, but Mr. Davis,
director of the Career Center, was
unable to assist us." Outside pub-
lishers cause the expense of the
publication to soar to over $600.00.
The remaining funds will have to
come from professional contribut-
ions and from selling the publicat-
ion to the student body. Copies of the
Kaleidoscope will be made avail-
able to parents and citizens of the
community sometime in April or
May. Copies will be donated to the
public and school library.
"Part of the problem has been
lack of good publicity concerning the
magazine," Mrs. Newton comment-
ed. She hopes to organize her staff
into publicity and sales committ-
ees. These students will be res-
ponsible for distributing informat-
ion to the student body and public
about the magazine.
This project is a spin-off of Mrs.
Newton's involvement in the West
Virginia Writing Project. Nearly a
dozen Summers County teachers
enrolled in the fall writing class, and
it is anticipated that m 'e student
publications Will be developed at
other lecal echoois.
