4...)“ Seven Fitness Myt (NAPS)—With the New Year rapidly approaching, there’s no shortage of advice on the best ways to achieve your resolutions. Yet, bvhen it comes to fitness and weight loss goals, it can be diffi- cult to tell fact from fiction. Stay on the fast track to keep- ing your New Year’s resolutions. Here are Bowflex Fitness Advisor and author of “Beat the Gym,” Tom Holland’s top seven fitness myths exposed: Myth #1: You need to spend at least an hour in the gym to see results. Research shows you can actu- ally achieve better results doing 15 minutes of interval training three times a week than by jog- ging on a treadmill for an hour. Not sure where to start? Con- sider this: The new Bowflex Max Trainer” (www.bowflexmaxtrainer. com) burns up to 2V2 times the calories as do other cardio exercise equipment in 14 minutes and engages the upper body 80 per- cent more than a traditional ellip- tical. Plus, it’s designed specifi- cally for the home, so you can work out anytime. Myth #2: As long as you exercise, you can eat whatever you want. Whether you want to maintain, gain or lose weight, you need to make sure your caloric intake matches your goals. To lose weight, you need to eat fewer calories than you burn. For example, if you burn 500 calories during your workout and then eat two or more slices of pizza (topping 500 calories), you’ll end up gaining weight. You can determine how much to eat by testing your metabolic rate, since your metabolic rate is the energy you use in order to be alive plus the energy needed for daily activities. You can use this mea— surement to accurately identify how many calories your body needs. Myth #3: Organic or gluten- free foods are best for weight loss. There are many benefits of eat- ing organic or gluten-free foods. For example, they have more antioxidants, less pesticides and food additives. However, overeat- ing is still overeating. Make sure to evaluate your overall caloric intake and expenditures to stay within the bounds of your goal. Myth #4: Fitness shakes are -M_.-_;«-~J_.;: hs, Be Be smart about fitness myths to reach your New Year’s resolutions. Fitness shakes are a great way to help you achieve a healthy diet. the healthy diet necessary to reach fitness goals. For instance, the new line of Bowflex Body” (www.bowflexbody. com) fitness shakes activates the metabolism and helps build mus- cle, burn calories and boost energy, all while refueling the body. Myth #5: Do cardio on an empty stomach to burn the most fat. Many people believe if you work out on an empty stomach, your body will use its stored fat supply to fuel the exercise. How- ever, research shows fat burn is consistent whether you eat before a workout or not. If you’re looking for cardio motivation, the new Nautilus“ 616 cardio series (www.11autilus.com) includes a treadmill, elliptical, upright bike and recumbent bike. Features include groundbreaking technology for better connectivity and customizable workouts with the innovative Nautilus“) Trainer” app. . Myth _#6: Crunches are best for getting great abs. No matter how many crunches you do, you won’t see six—pack abs until you lose the layers of fat cov- ering your abdominal wall. The best way to lose fat is to stick to a strict diet and scorch major calo- ries with interval training and compound weight-lifting exercises —which use more than one major muscle group. Myth #7: I can’t reach my fitness goals because I can’t afford a trainer. Personal trainers are a great resource to help motivate and take you to the next level. But if you can’t afford a personal trainer, don’t be discouraged. There are many great (free!) resources online you can use to aid your fitness regime, including ' just for people who wantzto,‘ ,the Bowflex Insider blog at ., bulk “13' ' it, ;‘ ‘Ma'n’y'people confuse fitness ‘ shakes with “mass gainers”— products used to aid in bulking up. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) West Virginia Farm Service Agency (FSA) Executive Director, Richard V. Snuffer II, today announced that the deadline to submit ballots for the 2016 County Committee Elections has been extended to ensure farmers and ranchers have sufficient time to vote. Eligible voters now have until Dec. 13, 2016 to return ballots to their local FSA offices. Producers who have not received their ballot should pick one up at their local FSA office. "We're extending the voting deadline to Dec. 13 to give farmers and ranchers a few additional days to get their ballots in," said Snuffer. "I urge all eligible producers, especially minorities and women, to get involved and make a real difference in their communities by voting in this year's elections. This is your opportunity to have a say in how federal programs are delivered in your county." FSA has modified the ballot, making it easily identifiable and less likely to be overlooked. Ballots returned by mail must be postmarked no later than Dec. 13, 2016. Newly elected committee members will take office Jan. 1, 2017. Nearly 7,700 FSA County Committee members serve FSA offices nationwide. Each committee has three to 11 elected members who serve three-year terms of office. One- third of County Committee seats are up for election each year. County Committee members apply their knowledge and judgment to help FSA make important decisions on its commodity support, conservation, indemnity, disaster and emergency programs. Producers must participate or cooperate in an FSA program to be eligible to vote in the County . Committee election. Approximately 1.5 million producers are currently eligible to vote. Farmers and ranchers who supervise and conduct the farming operations of an entire farm, but are not of legal voting age, also may be eligible to vote. For more information, visit the FSA website at www.fsa.usda.gov/ elections. You may also contact your local USDA service center or FSA office. Since 2009, USDA has provided $5.6 billion in disaster relief to farmers and ranchers; expanded risk management tools with products like Whole Farm Revenue Protection; and helped farm businesses grow with $36 billion in farm credit. The Department has engaged its resources to support a strong next generation of farmers and ranchers by improving access to land and capital; building new markets and market opportunities; and extending new conservation opportunities. USDA has developed new markets for rural made products, including more than 2,700 bio based products through USDA's Bio-Preferred program; and invested $64 billion in infrastructure and community facilities to help improve the quality of life in rural America. One of the most commonly cited reasons patients stop taking med- ications as prescribed is related to a desire to reduce health care costs. As baby boomers reach retirement age, they are expected to live longer on average than pre- vious generations and will also face new health challenges and con- cerns, such as managing chronic health conditions, which can be overwhelmingly expensive. With rising health costs and changing health care coverage weighing on the minds of families and baby boomers alike, here are some simple tips for families to save money while taking care of their health: 1. Try the store-brand versions of healthy products like vitamins. Store-brand supplements and remedies are formulated to deliver the same performance that shop- pers expect from the national brands and are held to the same strict testing guidelines, all at more affordable prices. 2. Ask your pharmacist about generic prescription options. These medications offer the same active ingredients as brand-name medica- tions at a lower cost, which can make a big difference when manag- ing chronic conditions. Generic pre— scription medications are FDA approved and are safe and effective. 3. Keep taking your prescribed medications as directed, because For Artic Hinton DEADLINE submitted for publication in The is the preceding Thursday of desired publication date Some drugstores, such as CVS/ pharmacy, offer programs de- signed to help consumers save and earn more rewards on prescriptions. taking medications irregularly can impact your overall health. To stay on track, talk openly with your pharmacist. It has been shown that regular consultations with a pharmacist can make patients twice as likely to take medications as prescribed, which can lower health care costs by thousands of dollars annually. 4. Look into pharmacy savings programs. For example, members of the new ExtraCare Pharmacy & Health Rewards” program at CVS/pharmacy® receive Extra- Bucks® Rewards when they refill prescriptions and take other health-related actions, such as getting flu shots, enrolling in online prescription management services, or signing up for pre- scription text message alerts. Enrolling is free and easy and can be done on the CVS/pharmacy website or in-store at the phar- macy counter.
