Understanding
Your Pension
Facts From The U.S. Dept. Of Labor
i ,i ,,, ,,, ,,
Q. What is vesting?
A. Vesting is your right to the
benefits you have accrued, or some
portion of them, even if your em-
ployment under the plan termi-
nates. This relates to money con-
tributed by your employer. Volun-
tary and mandatory employee con-
tributions are always fully vested.
Most plans allow you to vest after
five years. Union plans usually
require 10 years of service while
seven year graded vesting is preva-
lent among endowments and foun-
dations.
Q. What does it mean when
my pension benefit is integrated
with Social Security?
A. Normally, only plans in which
the monthly benefit is defined are
integrated with Social Security.
When you retire a percentage of
expected monthly Social Security
benefits is subtracted from the
private annuity. Any type of plan,
however, may provide that lower
pension accruals be applied to an
employee's earnings below a speci-
fied wage base, generally the So-
cial Security wage base.
