t J / 2 SENIOR NEWS Pictured left toright are Scott Briers and Myra Ziegler. IN THE LIBRARY The Library was a VERY busy place during the month of Oct.! Our literacy program started up with a flurry of activity. Activity which included carrying a huge and gigantic desk up our very narrow and steep stairs• We do want to thank the two gentlemen who were here innocently reading and =volunteered" to help. I hope they won't think we make our patrons carry desks upstairs every time they come in: We also received our new computers and program so that the High School, Hinton Area and Talcott School can now dial in to the Library's computer. This process involved being without a computer for a few days while the new system was installed and served as a lesson as to just how much we have come to depend on these amazing (and often frustrating) machines. Our circulation here rises constantly - we have already circu- lated 5,000 MORE items since July of this year than we did for the same period last year. If the librarians had to do all the cataloging, filing and counting by hand the way we used to wed probably have to be closed one day a week just to keep up! Now that the new sYstem is in place, students and teachers can use the computer see if the Library has materials they want or need, and, if they cannot get to the Library to get them,we will arrange to deliver them. And last but perhaps mostimpoldmnt we had two very successful fund raisers. The raffle in which Scott Bries won a $100 bill and the Library gained more than $400 for ou r rather desperate =Inclf' fund and a most "delicious and wonderful benefit dinner at Pence Springs which will proba- bly give our favorite worm at least a $1,000 boost (we will know once we get the bills)..We do very much thank Ashby Berkley and the staff at the Pence Springs Hotel and all our wonderful Friends of the Library who worked so hard on our benefit. In order to keep the wolf from the door and NOT to have • to close the Library any more days per week we need to raise at least $4,000 each quarter and here we are'a third of the way through the second quarter in our fiscal year and we have just made it past the first $4,000 mark! So please keep us in mind .... I Tues, Nov. 5, 1991 Hinton News - 7 From Page 2 Education Has Its Price the outcome has been and will con- tinue to be poor results. After all ofthese depressing facts, I do offer a solution to our lucation problem, a solution with three easy- to-follow steps so that everyone can understand and take action. First, we must vote for the levy. Next, we need to attend the Board of Educa- tion meet£ngs and ask for an item- ized list of all the levy money spent. We should insist that the money be used for educational materials, and school repairs. We are to remember that the Board members, who are elected by the public, must answer to the public. The population of Summers County, if united and motivated, has the power to force the Board to spend the money appro- priately. The last step ofthe solution is to support and elect only those people who serve the educational needs of Summers County best. Electing people who have interest in the schools, such as parents of stu- dents who are presently in school, will result in better education ad- ministration. They, for the most part, are very interested in the affairs of the school system, and would very much like to see the quality of educe. tion in Summers County improve• What good would it do to have an American musical artist in charge of a vocational welding school in Tibet? He would have no interest in or understanding of what was happen- ing at his institution. Chances are, someone who has personal interest in improving education will work harder, and accomplish more, and the school system will see a great difference andimprovement. I under- stand that many people are angry, and they have a right to be angry considering the fumbles and blun- ders of the past few years of the Board of Education. But, if some- thing isn't done, if there is no sup- port offered soon, if the school sys- tem is punished utterly crushed by tremendous and unfair opposi- tion it may be too late to ever save our schools, our children, or our future. Sincerely, Joey Hartwell 250 Sycamore Lane Green Sulphur Springs, WV 25976 BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT The Summers-Monroe Confer- ence Jr. High Girl's Basketball Tournament is being held this week at Hinton High School.
