BOE Meeting
The Man versus Horse Marathon is an annual race of over 22 miles,
where runner• compete against riders on horseback. The raoe--
which is a shorter distance than an official marathon road race--
takes place in the Welsh town of Llanwrtyd Wells every June..The'
event dates from 1980, when a local pub landlord overheard a conver-
sation about how a man could beat a horse over a long d!stance.

The Summers County Board of
Education welcomed presentations
from both Summers Middle School
and HintonArea Elementary School
during the regular meeting on
Wednesday, October 12, 2016.
Mrs. Christian, a seventh grade
English teacher at Summers Middle
School presented her club titled the
"Random Acts of Kindness Club."
This club of seventh graders strive
to increase kindness and provide a
positive environment for their peers
and staff. They have taken part in
projects such as teaming up with
REACHH and collecting donations
of toiletries to give out to people in
need, along with kids in the club
taking on individual projects of their
own. One student is beginning a
cleanup crew for their playground
where she will provide gloves and
trash bags, whereas another bull
the "Bobcat Robot which
positive messages out to other
students.
To accompany the Random
of Kindness Club, Mrs.
also leader of the Summers Middle
School book club and presented
about this organization as well. Her
goals with book club are to give the
kids a sense of belonging, enhance
their performance not only on end
of the year testing but STAR testing
as well, and to build positive
relationships with their peers and
rapport with their teachers. Mrs.
Christian provides snacks and books
for this club so it remains completely
free for students.
Hinton Area Elementary
principal Mrs. Gumm and some of
her students presented their.~
program "Wild for Reading". It is
] e ip }'0rm a i0ve for
reading and promote literacy. Many
activities take place, ranging from
tracking and rewarding classrooms
for the amoun of books they read,
to the decorating of the hallways and;
their doors, their book fair that takes
- no profit, and even their read aloud
program. Each month, students are
aspiring to read one hundred books;
to win the competition hosted
through the program.
