Oct. 18, 2016 Hinton News - 3 :: .... If you like a man's laugh before you know anything of him, you may say with confidence that he is a good man. . l --Fjodor M. Dostoyevsky ++ Paid Political Advertisement I Summers, Monroe, Raleigh Counties, District #28 .I un? As many of you know, I am a candidate for the West Virginia House of Delegates in the 28th District. I am a registered Democrat, have never been anything but a Democrat, and I am committed to the concern for people that has always defined the Democratic Party. I write so you can get to know me. For reasons I will not go into here [I'm extremely emotional on this one], the Democratic Party chose to run away from its own roots afler Barack Obama was elected in 2008. I am convinced that was a terrible mistake, for the Party, for the principles and ideals the Party abandoned, and for the millions of struggling Americans who have always beenable .to rely on Democrats to put them first. Here in West Virginia, we hear all the time that there's no difference between the major parties. How many times have you watched people switchparties? W'th almost no idea that they've done anything that matters one way or the other? WELL, IT DOES MATTER. AND I'M DETERMINED TO PROVE IT. We Democrats must embrace our principles. They're worthy of our support. Think about it. A political party committed to what man has always known to be right. Treat others as we want them to treat us. So simple, yet so important. It's what gives us all hope for the future. What Democrats are about is what scripture tells us life itself is about. No reason to be embarrassed by it. It is in this spirit that I choose to run for the WV House. I elieve especially in light of what's happening with Republicans nationally and right here in West Virginia, that our political campaigns should feature programs, policies, and positives. From Democrats and Republican alike. I must know in my heart that a vote for me is a vote for the things I stand for, for the best interests of the people in my district. It is not healthy, it is wrong, to run a negative campaign when your opponents most likely believe in what they're doing as strongly as I do. I won't do that. But here in West Virginia, Republicans have controlled both houses of the legislature for two consecutive sessions. They've compiled a record they must now defend. On worker rights, on education, on PEIA and broken promises, on corporate tax breaks, on health care, on property rights, gas pipelines, and pooling, on their support for ideology and system over people, and most importantly, on ,their reluctance to address the state's budget crisis in time even to pass a budget during the regular session. They've wasted money, with little to show for it. Too much attention to ideology, too little on the people's business! Perhaps most telling about the Republican legislative agenda was a proposal that did not pass. Like much that did, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act [HB 4012] was drafled by out-of-state special interests [ALEC]. It consumed valuable legislative time during the 60-day session, only to be scuttled at the 11th hour by many of its initial supporters. When anti-discrimination language was incorporated into the bill, many of its initial backers backed away from it. What does that say about the intent that initially attracted so many? Voter education in the region demands that Democrats force Republicans to defend what they have done, not done, and why. For years, Democrats in West Virginia seemed comfortable running on what always was, Republicans on what might be. Well, now we know' that what always was won't work anymore. And now we've seen what Republicans meant by what might be. This is the first election in West Virginia in some time where the issues are clear. It's my job to help define the choices. Then it'll be up to the people to decide. That's as it should be. But there's one final point to stress. WE'VE GOT TO VOTE, ALL OF US. The numbers tell us that Republicans didn't win control of state government. Democrats lost it by not voting. Please make sure your voice is heard. Your vote counted. Early voting begins on October 26th. If you're as eager as I am to turn things around in Charleston, you should be there• before the doors even open! A whole lot of good people are depending on you! O'Brien-Candidate for WV House of Delegates.,' Please know that I appreciate your support and will do all I can to earn it. THANKYOU! Paid for by William O'Brien
