Calico & Jeans Square Dance Club
The Calico and Jeans Square
Dance Club, headquartered in
Beckley, will put on a lively
exhibition during the Hinton
Railroad Days Festival. Club
members say they are looking
forward to showing off their hard
work and beautiful costumes. "Many
people don't realize that squar e
dancing is not only the official folk
dance of West Virginia, it is also the
official folk dance of the United
States.
Once you've mastered the basic
steps in square dancing, it can take
you anywhere in the United States
and abroad, she says, adding that
they often perform for hospitals,
schools, nursing homes and malls.
Ellen Neely, another member of
the troupe, says that "once the bug
has bitten --square dancers really
look forward to the next dance,
whether it is local or a state or

Bureau Women's Committee will
begin their Farm Safety and AG
Fact Program in all three
elementary schools this month.
Presenting the program at Talcott
Elementary is Peg Bollenbach; at
Jumping Branch Elementary is
Norma Meadows; and Hinten Area
Elementary is Toni McQuaig.
Once a month these women will
bring safety and agriculture fact
sheets, usually including an activity
into the classroom. The teachers will
do a short followup and hopefully
will be a lot of fun for everyone. This
program will run throughout the
school year with hopefully an end of
the year Farm Fun Day.
The members of the Women's
Committee would like to thank all
the principals and teachers for being
so responsive to this program. Also
thank you to Carl and Loretta
Amick, and Ron Fowler for
supplying materials.

& WV POWER GAS SERVICE AND HEARINGS
On September 24, 1999, Monong•hal• Power
Company, doing business •s Allegheny Power, and
UtiliCorp United Inc., by its divisions West Virginia
Power and Wext Virginia Power Gas Service, jointly
petitioned for the ComnfiMio'o permimon, pursuant
to W. VA. Code § 24-2-12, for Allegheny Power to buy
WV Power and WV Power Gas Service. That petition
was aignod Case Number 99-1407-EG-PC.
Allegheny Power says it plans to continue to
operate the utilities with current employeco snd to
assume the Collective B•rg•ining Agreement.
Allegheny Power plmm to generally freeze both electric
and gas rates to West Virginia Power cuomers for
seven years, except that the fuel portion of gas ratex
would be allowed to sluctuats with the fuel market.
Tho Colaalhulidn WaS to expedits its review, so
that the sale cotdd time by December 15, 1999.
When the aslo case was filed, the Commission
already had started a separate case to investigate
quality of service complaints made by electric
cnstomers efWV Power. That procaeding was assigned
Case Number 99-1327-E-GI. The Commission decided
to consider those quality of service complaints at the
same time that it coneidera that propod sale of WV
Power and WV Power Gas Service to Allegheny Power.
Therefore, the Commiinn consolidated these two
cas.
Due to the request for expedited treatment, the
Commission promptly set two hearings to receive
public comment;

Service will discuss the proposed sale and be prepared
to respond to the quality of servize questions raised in
Case Number 99-1327-E-GI at both hearings. Among
the concerr which have been reported are frequent
power outages, power surges, right-of-way €learing,
out-of-store customer service rentetives, lack of
manpower to restore service, lack of concern for
economic development/alternate power sources,
insuffident facilities, and lack of a customer service
advisory committee.
All interested persons may •trend and represent
their internes as may be appropriate. Anyone wishing
to comment on the proposed sale or the service
¢omplamto may file a concise and specific written
statement with the Executive Secretary, West VL, ginia
