IN THE LIBRARY
C&P employee, Bob Farley, delivered 12 backpacks, gifts from the
Telephone Pioneers, to Librarian Myra Ziegler. The backpacks were
back to school gifts for the children of LAMP and GED students who
attended the Bell Club during the spring and summer. Bell Club is
funded through a grant from Bell Atlantic/ALA and operated by the
Summers County Public Library. Children of those adults who are
studying to take their GED tests or are involved in the adult literacy
program, can spend the time while their parents are in class or being
tutored, doing homework, playing games, reading, doing crafts with
the Bell Club coordinator, Tamale Wood.
While Bell Club is going full steam ahead, the Library received some
bad news about its adult literacy program, LAMP. The US Dept. of
Education chose not to fund the literacy program in Summers County
for another year. This means that there will not be paid staff'to help
train tutors, assign tutors to students and be sure that these student-
tutor pairs have appropriate material, a place to meet, etc. Students
who are currently working with volunteer tutors can, of course,
continue to study and the Library is actively pursuing alternative
sources of funding and alternative programs in an effort to serve those
folks who need help.
Despite the Sept. sadness at not havingour literacy grant approved.
Library staffand Friends managed to have a wonderful time as guests
of David and Barbara Palmer on Sun. the 26th. Apprmdmately, 40
fflks turned out to eoy the delicious food and admire the beautiful
ardens at the Parmer's Greenbrier River home. The event raised $450
for the Library's operating fund and encouraged several people to
become members of this vitally important group who work so diligently
to help out the Library. We do thank the Parmers for their hospitality.
