CAPTURE PIZZA HUT
IC TITLE
Hinton Jr. High and Talcott Jr.
High squared off in the Jr. High
Division Championship of the Hin-
ton Pizza Hut Classic. Talcott
reached the finals by defeating Buf-
falo-Wayne 42 to 35, while Hinton
reached the championship with a 42
- 28 win over St. Marys Junior High.
In the first quarter Hintonjumped
out to a 14 to 7 lead after one period.
Farrah Lilly led Hinton's first quar-
ter scoring with 5 points followed by
Joetta Cales with 4 points. Andrea
Crook with 3, and Lindsay Keaton
with 2 points. Farrah Lilly and Joetta
Cales both finished with 15 points in
the contest and Cales pulled down
11 rebounds.
In the second:quarter, Hinton
outscored Talcott 13 to 9. Patricia
Sea provided mo £ of the Pirates
offense as she scored 6 of her game
high 17 points in this quarter.
However, the Jr. High Lady Bobcats
balanced attack was too much for
much to handle as Hinton took a 27
to 16 lead into the half.
Third quarter action saw Talcott
continue to make runs at Hinton's
lead, but they were never able to
overtake the Bobcat team. Down the
stretch, Hinton's pressure defense
forced key turnovers which led to
baskets by Lindsay Keaton, Farrah
Lilly, and Joetta Cales to seal the
victory. The Lady Bobcats were also
able to dominate the boards. For the
game, Hinton outrebounded Talcott
50 to 22. Andrew Crook who was
named tournament MVP pulled
down a career high 21 rebounds along
with 5 points, 4 assists and 3 steals.
The Junior High Lady Bobcats
record now improves to 2-0. Hinton
plays Sandstone Tues. at 1:00 pro.
The Jr. High Lady Bobcats winners
of 20 consecutive games going back
to last season then travel to the site
of their last defeat when they play at
Talcott Thurs. night. Preliminary
game starts at 6:00 and the Jr.High
game is set at 7:30.

ST. MARYS
The Jr. High division of the Hin-
ton Pizza Hut Classic Basketball
Tournment got on the way Fri. Sept.
13, and it didn't take long for the
Hinton Jr. High Lady Bobcats to
establish their dominance over the
St. Marys Lady Blue Devils. Hinton
exploded by placing six players in
the 1st. quarter scoring column.
Stephanie Meadows led the way with
six points followed by Joetta Cales
with four, and Sharon Yopp, Cheryl
Cooper, Farrah Lilly, and Andrea
Crook all with two points. After one
quarter of play Hinton held an 18-2
lead.
In the second quarter, the Jr. High
Lady Bobcats increased their lead to
34 to 10 as Lindsay Keaton entered
the game and provided instant of-
fense with six points. Stephanie
Meadows picked up four more points
in this quarter and led Hinton in
scoring with ten in the contest.
Third quarter action saw Hinton
and St. MalTs play to a standoff
bringing the score to 41 - 17 after
three periods. The final period of
play saw St. Marys make the score
respectable as Nikki Saler scored six
of her teams eleven points while
Fed th Former provided the lone point
for Hinton.
The Jr. High, Lady Bobcats in
capturing the 42 to 28 opening sea-
son victory impressed St. MalTs
Coach John Armstrong. Armstrong
called Hinton Jr. High an "awesome
team with size, strength, speed, and
skill. Armstrong also commented
on the depth of the Jr. High Lady
Bobcats saying; %here's not just one
or two good players in that group,
theres alot of good players and their
pressure was too much for us to
handle. Hinton Jr. High will be back
in action traveling to Sandstone
Tues. at 1:00, and to Talcott Thurs.
night with game times being 6:00
and 7:30.

Grade Basketball Team opened their
1991 season with an impressive 43
to 17 win over Athens Jr. High.
Hinton's man to man pressure forced
33 Athens turnovers and after a slow
start Hinton led at this half 15 to 6
behind the scoring of Beth Farley
and Faith Fortner with 4 points,
Kristi Clark with 3, and Laura Rol-
lyson and Jessica Bragg with 2 each.
The cond half was all Hinton as
Stephanie Meadows scored 9 third
quarter points and Lindsay Keaton
added 5 points to go along with 2
more from Jessica Meadows.

THE HINTON BOBCATS
The Bobcats won their 2nd. game
of the year over Pocahontas Co. 26 to
14. Junior running back Matt Rodss
rushed for 228 yards. Matt broke
free on a touchdown run of 60 yards
in the 4th. quarter to help maintain
the win. Matt also led the team in
tackles for the third straight week.
Bobby Fox, Lamont Smith an d Rodes
had 8 tackles a piece in this week's
game. Mike Harshaw started the
scoring with a pass from Steven
Brown for 31 yards. Lamo,t Smith
recovered a fumble in the end zone
for another touchdown for the Cats.
Harshaw also kicked one of three
extra points. This was a big win for
Hinton on the road in Pocahontas
Co. This week our Bobcats will be
home Fri. Night to play Van at 7:30.

cheer for the Bobcats.
HINTON JR. HIGH FOOTBALL
Hinton won their 1st game of the
year Thurs. night beating Meadow
Bridge 18 to 14. Hinton had to come
from behind with 3 second-half
touchdowns for the win, with less
than two minutes to go in the game
John Graham recovered a fumble to
give Hinton a chance. Hinton was
behind 14 to 12 at the time and afew
plays later Jason Pack threw the
game winning touchdown to Joe
Blankenship.
Chad Meador ran for a 65 yard
touchdown in the game and Jason
Pack ran for a 8 yard score himself.
The Jr. High will play this week
against Stoco.

THE WEEK

Harshaw. Three touchdowns, two
interceptions, kicked a extra point,
recovery a fumble and 6 tackles.

HINTON WINS GOLF
TOURNEY
Hinton's golf team raised its rec-
ord to 15-1 this season by winning a
tight five teams tournament Wed.,
beating Bluefield by a total of two
strokes and Princeton by three.
Hinton had a total 324 and Blue-
field and Princeton followed closely
behind with 326 and 327 scores re-
spectively. Oak Hill had a score of
331 and Oceana scored 352.
Ocean's Benny Bowles had the
best day shooting a 75. Five other
golfers also shot scores under 80.
HINTON BEATS NICHOLAS
Matt Rodes No. 40, Lamont Smith No. 30 and
Bruce Jackson No. 44
The Hinton High School golfteam
improved its record to 16-1 Thurs.,
taking a 333-361 victory from Nicho-
las County.
Hinton's Lake Wykle shot a 75 to
take medalist honors.
Tues., Hinton visits White Oak
Country Club for a match against
Oak Hill.
HINTON REACHES CLIASSIC
FINALS
The Hinton High School girls
basketball team advanced to the
finals of the Hinton-pizza Classic
with a 64-35 win over Buffalo-Wayne
Fri. evening at Hinton High School.
The Lady Bobcats will meet St.
Marys in the finals which will be a
rematch of the 1989 Class AA state
championship game. St.Marys de-
feated Oceana, 61-35, in the other
high school contest.
Melanie Brumit paced Hinton (2-
0) with 18 points while Kristen
Keaton added 17 an Jenny Marm 16.
Celane Angell contributed 10 re-
bounds.
Sara Tomlin added 16 in a losing
cause for Buffalo.
In the first game, Andrea Eaton
and Crystal Weaver both scored 12
points to pace St. Marys (2-1). Ma-
