Is Battery
Acceptable in
the Courthouse?
Dear Editor:
Anywhere you look in Summers
County, you can see signs
encouraging women to seek shelter
from their abusers. We have a
Women's Shelters, Abuse Hotlines
and anything else you could ask for.
But in the Summers County
courthouse, battery is apparently
okay.
Almost six months ago, along
with my daughter and my sister, I
was the victim of battery. This
occurred inside the courthouse and
within the sight and hearing of
several elected county officials. Not
one of the these "men" stepped
forward to come to our assistance.
They chose to wait for the sheriffand
his deputy to come from across the
street and take care of the problem.
That was fine for our attackers; it
allowed them an,eRtra fouwor, five
minutes to kick;,punbh'ant hit m',"
What kind of message are we'i
sending to our children. We raise our
little boys by telling them that it's
. wrong to hit little girls and hope that
they remember that when they
become men. So what do we tell our
children when we come home
bruised and broken? That we were
wrong to teach them not to hit
women.... That it's Only illegal if it's
done in the privacy of a home? That
it's okay as long as it's done in a
public place such as the courthouse?
What kind of double standard are
we teaching?
When a preliminary hearing was
held at the magistrate's court to
charge the men who attacked us, we
were asked on the courthouse steps,
if we wanted to drop the charges.
When we told them we did not, our
attackers were escorted like royalty
into the magistrate's office, while the
three of us were left to share a bench
in the hallway. We were not allowed
to hear what was being said but
were later told that they would
schedule another hearing and that
we would be notified of the date. I
have called the courthouse
numerous times, but no one will tell
me anything. So what am I to think?
That the court system is
applauding these men for their
attack. That the are being patted on
the back and told "good job."
How can we continue to advertise
that there is help for abuse victims,
when the Summers County Court
System seems to condone abuse?

With the incidence of breast
cancer being one in eight women in
West Virginia and across the United
States, it is vital that Summers
County maintain a strong focus and
vigilance in providing financial
assistance to women who have been
diagnosed with this disease, and to
continue to provide mammograms
for those residents in our community
who are unable to afford this life
saving service.
On Saturday, October 4, the
seventh annual "Walk for Her
Lifetime" event will be held at
Bellepoint Park. Registration gets
underway at 9:30 a.m., with the
program and "Walk" beginning at
10:00 a.m. Registration fee is
$10.00.
In order to avoid the substantial
costs required to purchase and print

Iaftime--ommittee-eqest lat,
our faithful friends who "Walk" with
us every yeai" wear a shirt frCai past
years. We believe it is the program
that is important- not the shirts!
We have been delighted to have new
shirts every year - but increased
costs have made it impossible to
continue that tradition •this year. We
will have on hand bottled water,
refreshments and great door prizes
from local business supporters and
the "Walk for Her Lifetime"
Committee. Each walker will
receive a nationally recognized pink
breast cancer awareness pin.
"Walk for Her Lifetime" is
sponsored by Appalachian Regional
Healthcare, Inc. All funds raised in
Summers County stay in Summers
County for the use and benefit of
Summers County residents. It is a
strictly volunteer program with no
administrative fees or other costs.
Over the past six years, "Walk for
Her Lifetime" has raised in excess
of $50,000 for the use and benefit of
Summers County residents.
If you know anyone who could
benefit from this program, we urge
you to refer them to any member of
the "Walk for Her Lifetime"
Committee.
We very much need your
continued support to help us help
others.

A PRIZE FIGHT AT
THURMOND:
The railroad town of Thurmond,
W. VA., deep in the New River Gorge,
has long been noted as the abiding
place of the Harrington and the Iver
Johnson, commonly called
"Saturday Night Specials." A drink
of liquor was usually within arms
reach and excitement could be found
both day and night. It wasn't
unusual for a fist fight to break out
but the story I have to tell is that of
a prize fight with six-ounce boxing
gloves.
A. P. Canepa, a local resident; who
was the stenographer for Clark
Lawrence, Commissioner for the
merchants of Thurmond. As a boxer
he was untrained and weighed only
about 170 pounds and looked like a
school boy beside his husky
opponent. He was, however, street
wise in the art of self defense.
Chris Himmler, of Cumberland,
MD., was a salesman for a
Pittsburgh, PA., firm who came to
Thurmond often making sales for
the company he represented. He was
a trained boxer, a big strong,
muscular, fellow weighing 195
pounds stripped and in the pink of
condition.
Canepa challenged him to a
boxing match. The citizens of'
Thurmond could not understand
why Canepa would be so foolish and
felt he didn't have the slightest
chance to win but were willing 'to
back the local boy. Searching for a
site for the fight to be held, Mr.
Taylor, Manager of the Dunglen
Hotel, under the impression it was
merely a friendly, privete affair, gave
permission for the fight to be held
in the basement of the Dunglen,
Friday night, March 8, 1904.
As the day of the fight grew closer,
excitement was at a high pitch.
Everyone was talking about the
fight and it was apparent a huge
crowd of cigarette smoking
panhandlers and other "Cattle," as
they were called, was being
atWacted,to the affair, On,the riiht

begah to gatler. Mr.'Ttor refued
to lend his aid and the key to the
basement suddenly and
mysteriously could not be found.
A quick conference was held
between the two contestants and it
was decided to have the fight under
one of the arch lights at the west end
of the Dunglen viaduct and the east
end of the Thurmond bridge. A
human ring was formed and the
fight, before about 250 cheering
onlookers, got under way at 10:30
p.m.
The fight, reported by the Hinton
Daily News of March 9, 1904, is as
follows;
"FIRST ROUND"
"Both men advanced to the center
of the ring and shook hands. After
preliminary sparing, Himmler led
