O. BOX 1000 HINTON, WV 25951 J By Austin Persinger We feel like every day is special at the Summers County Public Library but Saturday, August 27 was an especially special day as approximately 75 people came to celebrate the Library's 39th birthday and Myra Ziegler's retirement. We had a great time and it was very encouraging to see so many library lovers, friends, and supporters gathered together. Growing up in Summers County I always knew Myra simply as the "Library Lady", the person who embodied the Library, one of my favorite places in the world. Adults that happily help children, whether they are teachers, coaches, parents, or even librarians seem larger than life. They make you feel special when they stop doing whatever it is that adults do and take time out for you. Myra was always so cheerful and happy to help that she fostered a love of reading in learning in literally thousands of children in Summers County. That is a truly remarkable accomplishment. As I got older I found that she still treated me with warmth and respect. She was patient and understanding even when I was an obnoxious teenager. I was never made to feel unwelcome; I don't even ti~hl~'~ sl~i]~d'~eTo~:t:dudly giggli~ ov~r,'the crude drawings in --As I beca~-an-~aI$,:M~ remained Very helpful and willing to track down books for me, even going to the great expense of ordering them from other libraries, or purchasing them for the library's collection. She was always willing to find any book or information that I needed. The great thing is that she wasn't actually treating me special; she just treats everyone the same way, making everyone feel welcome. Although she came to personify the library, she never treated it as her library; because she understands that public libraries belong to the public. The most important thing I learned working with Myra, is that public libraries are one of the greatest institutions of democratic society because everyone is welcome and everyone has equal access to information, entertainment, and services. As a long-time patron, former employee, and current Director of the Summers County Public Library I just want to thank Myra for her 34 years of passionate service that has made this community a much better place. We've got a ton of great activities coming up so be sure check us out in the Hinton News or on Facebook to stay in the loop.
