Congratulations to all those who read with us on our Summer
Reading Program over the past two months. There were some
real book worms among this years readers and there's nothing
like a young book worm to warm a librarian's heart ! Now that the
program is over for another year we will miss all those avid young
readers. But we hope to see them during the winter and again for
next summers program !!
There should be a lull in junior library activity for the next few
weeks while kids get settled back into their school routines. It's a
good time for grown up kids to come in to bask in the peace and
find a good book to or two. We've received several over the last
week that look enticing. Among the new nonfiction are : The Fit
or Fat Target Diet, Everything You Want to Know about Chinese
Cooking by Pearl King Chen, Cooking in the New South: A
Modern Approach to Traditional Southern Fare and Veget-
arisna; A Rich Harvest of Wit, Love and Recipes. Also Michael
Maron's Instant Makeover Magic full of personal beauty advice
and before and after cosmetics pictures of well known faces: Paul
Theroux' The Kingdom By the S~a: A Journey around Great
Britain; Pets and their People ) James Dent says we must call
them " Companions" not pets) and Russia: Broken Idols,
Solemn Dreams.
The fiction shelves are equally well stocked with Philippa
Carr's Voices in a Haunted Room, John MacDonald's One More
Sunday and Max Brand's Rogue Mustang likely to lead the pack
in popularity. There is also a new Andre Norton chiller called
House of Shadows ( look on the juvenile shelves for this one) a
book, The Journeyer, about Marco Polo, Gaff Parent's A Little
Bit Married ( Gaff created TV's Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman
) and an unusual love story Poisinery Harbor, by Mary Emily
Pearce. Quite a selection to help while away the last few days of
this very wet summer!

Letter To
The Editor
August 24, 1984
To the Editor:
Is the West Virginia press
doing its job? The Republican
,~andidate for governor had
tens .of thousands of dollars in
cash in his office while he was
governor. Where did it come
from? Who gave it to him? Why
did they give it to him? What, if
anything, did he give in re-
turn? With the exception of the
Charleston Gazette, the media
is silent. Where are the Wood-
wards and Bernsteins?
The Republican candidate for
governor gave a huge contract
for license plates to an out - of -
state firm headed by a con-
victed bribe payer. Why? Wh-
ere are you who would be the
next Ted Koppei?
The Republican candidate for
governor had three department
heads indicted. One of them
went to prison for racketeer-
ing after he was convicted of
shaking down liquor companies
for campaign contributions for
his boss. What did Arch Moore
know of all of this, and when did
he know it?
Why did Arch Moore settle
the suit arising out of the
Buffalo Creek disaster on his
last day in office for pennies on
the dollar and then stick the
taxpayers with the bill? What
would Dan Rather ask about
this?
These examples are no more
than the tip of the iceberg and
yet the West Virginia press
appears to be unconcerned. If
Arch Moore were up for Sen-
ate confirmation for a federal
post, what do you think the
national media would do with
the above? Would the press of
Ohio, Pennsylvania or New
York react as the West Vir-
ginia press has?
Questions, about whether or
not this is a negative campaign
are no subsquite for hard -
nosed reporting At least give
us the facts.
