Homecoming On
New River Hills
Low Gap Methodist Church
Summers County, West
Virginia
Dorothy Turman
Annual Homecoming
services were held at Low Gap
Methodist Church on August 12,
1984. Long ago, this commun-
ity was called New River Hills.
Even farther back in time,
people walked, rode horseback
or used horses and buggy to get
to services at the Low Gap
Meetin' House.
Trustees of the Low Gap
Church in August, 1912 were :
O. L. Foster, T. R. Turner, W.
W. Williams, J. W• Allen and J•
A. Allen.
Remember Murvil telling us
about Preacher Westfall? With
his shiny shoes and his sciss-
or - tailed coat? That was in
1922. Members of the Board
that year were J. L. McDowell
and J. W. Allen from Low Gap;
R. R. Light from Forest Hill; J.
F. Huffman, S. P. Turner, and
John L. Lowry from Buck ; J. A.
Foster and W. H. (Henry)
Taylor from Mt. Zion.
Reading from the minutes of
the First Quarterly Conference,
known simply as "Quarterly",
dated Nov. 1, 1922 at Low Gap,
we find that the pastor's sal-
ary was made up from public
donations and contributions
from the various appointments.
In 1922, the amount was $311.17
for the first quarter, the mon-
ey coming from congregations
in Forest Hill, Low Gap, Mt.
Zion, Hill's Chapel, Neff's Ch-
apel and Bellepoint. John L.
Lowry was secretary and took
the minutes of the meeting.
Those attending the Low Gap
Homecoming were :
Lacy Wood, Mr. and Mrs.
Ray Wills, Marvin and Doro-
thy Meadows, Mrs. Edna Han-
nah Foster, Betty Allen, Moody
Gwinn, Dorse and Eloise Rich-
ardson and grand- daughter,
Katrina. Evelyn Wood. Lula
Foster, Guy Turner, Myrl Fos-
ter, and Ruth Thomas, all of
Hinton or nearby.
Also, Doyle Cook, Mr. and
Mrs. Denver Turner and boys,
Zenith and Edward Cook, Ra-
ndy Cook, Kenneth Lowry and
Linda Cook, James Allen and
Orville and Glenna Sounders,
all from Buck.
Also, Mrs. Fred Foster, Jew-
ell Thompson, Nannie Ramsey
and Lee and Nell Thompson, all
of Forest Hill.
From Bozoo, WV., Mr. and
Mrs. Murvil Turner; from Ball-
ard, Barbara Taylor; from
Welch, Bill Fernatt. Mr. and
Mrs. Russell Gadd came from
Williamstown, Mrs. Elizabeth
Shrewsberry Bonds from
Eccles, and Rev. and Mrs. Bill
Fox, Mark and Pare from'
Jumping Branch. This year
marks the 22nd year that Rev.
Fox has been coming to the top
of this mountain to deliver the PICK PIt:rURE~ UI-' ,, These pictures' are ones of
