On June 23, 2016 a great deluge
fell on parts of southern West
Virginia. It flash flooded many
'waterways including the main
stem of the Greenbrier River within
hours. It drown people, invaded
homes, and swamped vehicles.
While the biggest rainfall did
not strike Summers county, the
downstream effects certainly did.
At Camp Summers near Barger
Springs, the water came within two
feet of the all time record of January
19, 1996. A massive volunteer effort
reopened the camp within a couple
weeks.
At the former site of Groundworks
Nursery garden center along Route
3, the river drove the Soil Building
across the parking area and lodged
it against the pump house and a
couple Japanese maples.
By the time we reached the place
after dawn on June 24 the water
was already over the doors of the
sales pavilion. There was absolutely
