As you know, the purpose of interim meetings are to discuss the impact of past legislation and to assemble information for future legislation. This is the second year we have had abbreviated interim meetings. We have reduced the expense of having these meetings considerably by getting our meetings done in a two day period rather than the past practice of three days. I am on the joint education committee and ~ve met yesterday (Sunday) for two hours. The focus of our meeting had to do with the Education Audit of 2012. We were supplied with a great deal of information from several sources. It appears that, though the audit was four years ago and made specific recommendations as to the efficiency of education administration in West Virginia, we have not fully complied with those recommendations. We were Quorum *Old Business *Review and Approval of Minutes *New Business *Other Business *Adjourn For more information contact Stacy Ford, 304-466-7113 or email sford2Ca~vvstateu.edu IN THE HOUSE Your State, Your District supplied a line graph showing the monthly fee from its customers decrease of personnel in the WVDE building of around 75 employees. Hidden in another section of the report was a note talking about the number of positions (26) being repurposed to the RESA system. It would appear that reducing the bureaucracy in education cannot be left to the bureaucrats to resolve. Also discussed in the meeting was the issue of allowing students being homeschooled to participate in the sports and extracurricular activities in public schools. Legislation was offered in the last session to allow this but, though it passed in the senate, did not pass in the House Education Committee. I am confident that legislation will be offered in the next session to deal with the education audit and the issue of homeschoolers being allowed to participate in extracurricular activities in public schools. In the joint committee on health the topic of Direct Primary Care- was presented by three doctors. It was stressed that this type of care was already in place in Wheeling and surrounding areas. Basically this type of care starts with a and provides services in health care for less money to the patient. It is a new concept to me but at this point I would consider it as an alternative to avoiding the high co-pays and deductibles of most current healthcare plans. We will study it in greater detail in the coming months and I will be able to provide a more concise picture at some point. Finally, we were briefed by General Hoyer and transportation Director Mattox concerning flood recover and cleanup efforts in our state General Hoyer of the National Guard reports that .the response of citizenry throughout West Virginia and volunteers from other states was excellent. He further reports that, though much remains to be done, the hard work of the National Guard, local communities and other volunteers has been superb.
