Kelly Light George of South
Charleston, has been named
the West Virginia Mother of the
Year and this week has been
pcolclaimed " Kelly Light
George Week " by various
mayors and city managers
across the state of West
Virginia. Governor John D.
Rockefeller IV has bestowed
upon her. the title of
Distinguished West Virginian.
Kelly is the proud mother of
:fiye children three sons and
two daughters. They are
Vincent, a Political Scientist
with a masters degree in
Public PolicY Analysis) Victor,
an attorney at law; Valerie, a
Hospital Administrator, doing
her residency in London,
England; Van Thomas, U. S.
Army commissioned officer
and Vanessa who will be a
senior at George Washington
High School in September.
They are a close knit family
with a caring sharing attitude
that shows in the lives they
touch. They have shared in
many round table discussions.
Kellys philosphy on
parenting is simply that you
~mcannot spoil a child with love,
support, patience and un-
derstanding. She feels that you
just cannot love to much, and
that a child's world should not
be filled with " don't" . She
taught them not to do anything
for a reward, but to do it
because it is the right thing to
do. She taught them not the
importance of being rich or
poor, nor the importance of .
being black or white, but the
importance of being right or
wrong. Raised in Huntington,
Kelly was a member of Pi
Kappa Sigma Sorority at
Marshall University. She
moved to New York City,
where she attended Drake
Drama School and Cambridge
School of Radio and Television.
She modeled for Rosinoffs and
was in Public Relaticns with
the National Broadcasting
Company.
She has always been active
in the family's activities, but
has special interest of her own
as well. She is president of the
West Virginia Volunteer Ad-
visors, Kanawha District
Director of the West Virginia
Garden Clubs, serves as a
Democratic Committeewoman
and a DelegaTE TO THE
Democratic National Con-
vention for the fourth con-
vention.
She is,the only lady ever to
serve as a Kanawha County
Parks and Recreation Com-
missioner and the only lady to
serve on the Executive.
Committee, Board of Trustees
for H. J. Thomas Memorial
Hospital. She is a past
eaident of the Church -
. ~ome~ United Council and the
Beta Sigma Phi .International'
Sorority City Council.
