"The Spidt Of Christ"
Romans 8:9
..The Spirit of Christ Is the mest talked of and least
understood of almost any Bible subject. It is usually
understood to mean to compromise with error and con-
tend for nothing - to either agree with everybody and
everything or be quiet and take no issue. Christ was the
greatest controversialist that ever lived. He never allowed an
error to pass unchallenged tf R had anything to do with
human life and destiny. He never waited to be chafl-
enged. He challenged. And yet there are those who think a
man is not Christ-like who would challenge anybody in error
t~day, But those who have the Spirit of Christ are never too
timid to oppose error and condemn those who teach it. The
Spirit of Christ will tolerate no innovation and wink at no sin.
The Spirit of Christ clings teuncimmly to things that are
written. When Christ was tempted of the devil in the
wilderness, he met every temptation with " It is writt-
en". To do anything in religion without Bthlieai authority is
the Spirit of Christ. People are led by the Spirit only as
they mind the things of the Spirit and the things of the Spirit
are those things the Spirit reveals in the Bible. To do
~mything the Spirit does not teach is not being led by the
Spirit. The Spirit of Christ is manifestly lacking in any case
where the work and worshlp of the church is not according to
the thlngs written in the New Testament. It is not "
progresshm" to deviate from the work and worship of the
church as revealed in the New Testament. The Spirit of
Christ calls things by the right name whether it Is liked or
not. Christ called the Pharisees" hypocrites" because they
were. As a result, they persecuted him. The 8plrit in the
Apostles was to" convict the world of sin." The Spirit in the
Apostles never failed to condemn and to convict the sinner.
Those today who would be such diplomats as to side -#tep an
issue and say nothing that would cut the errorist to the heart
cannot claim the Spirit of Christ. Contrast the preachers in
New Testament times with preachers of today. Must one be
pessive, affable, agreeable, nocombative, a paeifest, to bare
the Spirit of Christ? Certainly not. The Spirit of Christ "
reproves" and " rebukes" as well as , exhorts", and is
unsparing in its denunciation of evil. The Spirit of Christ is
always definite and clear, and is no respecter of persons.
With It no denomination is recognized and no clan or faction
endm~,d. It seeks no comprise with those who have gone
away after the" doctrines" and commandments of men. "It
never plays hypocrite in a friendly pretense. Paul said: "By
the grace of God I am what I am." Just so the Spirit of Christ
will act Jn us today. May the word of Christ dwell in us with
all wisdom and that we be filled with his Spirit.

About Your
Social Security
APPLY FOR SSl PROMPTLY
Persons who believe they may be eligible for supplemental
security income (SSI) payments should apply promptly, Carl
Stewart, SSA manager in Beckley, said recently.
While applicants must provide certain information before their
eligibility for monthly payments can be decided, they should not
delay in filing if they do not have all the necessary in-
formation.
There is a very practical reason for people to apply for SSI
promptly, Stewart explained. Payments can start only with the
date of application or the date of eligibility, whichever is later. So
delay in filing can mean a loss in payment.
If some of the required information is lacking, the people in the
Social Security office will help the applicant obtain it, Stewart
advised. What kind of information is required?
SSI applicants should bring their Social Security card or a
record of their Social Security number; their birth certificate or,
if that is not available, the oldest proof of their age they have;
information about their income and assets, such as bank books,
insurance policies, and copies of tax returns; information about
their mortage if they own their home or about their lease if they
rent their home; and medical records concerning any dis-
ability ( including blindness) and the names of medical
institutions where they have been treated.
A disabled or blind child who applies for SSI payments should
have the same information, as well as information about his or
her parent's income, assets, etc. Where the child has no parents, a
guardian or other responsible person can apply for payments on
the child's behalf.
For more detailed information what is needed in applying for
SSI, contact the Beckley Social Security office, 214 N. Kanawha
Street ( P. O. Box Y) and ask for the free booklet, A Guide To
Supplemental Security Income.
The telephone number is 253 - 2741 ( long distance dial 1 - 800 -
642 - 2106, toll froe).
SSI is a Federal income maintenance program. Although it is
run by SSA, it is financed from general funds ~f the U. S.
Treasury.
