Q- My claim for compensat-

roved by the Veterans Admin-
istration. Am I noweligible for
service disabled veterans in-
surance?
A-- You are not eligible if your
only service was during World
War n. Service disabled vet-
erans insurance is available
only to those veterans released
from active service under other
than dishonorable conditions
after April 24, 1951.
Q-- My father reached age 78
in March 1979. Is he eligible for
the 25 percent increase in his
VA pension?
A-- NO. Public Law 95- 588
eliminated the 25 percent in-
crease in rates for veterans
attaining age 78 on or after
January 1, 1979.
However, those pensioners
who attained age 78 before
January 1, 1979, do retain the 25
percent pension increase they
received.

'FLY' IN NEW R--AD- CiT-Y" S-HO-W
TWIN STEINWAYS
For Suzanne Mason and
Raymond Viola, playing
twin Steinways in the new
musical show at New York's
Radio City Music Hall is a
moving experience -- both
literally and figuratively.
As the world-famous
rockettes prance before
the footlights, the entire
39-piece orchestra, includ-
ing one ton of Steinway
grand pianos, is lifted hy-
draulically from its stage-
front pit, glides up and over
the scenery and dancers, and
comes gently to rest at the
rear of the stage--playing
all the way.
"Let me tell you, it's like
flying," exclaims Ms. Mason.
"A truly uncommon expe-
rience," adds her travelling
keyboard companion,
Mr. Viola. Both share what
may be a pianistic first--
playing two Steinway con-
cert grands "in flight."
Flying musicians aren't
the only hallmark of this
new family musical extrav-
aganza of 26 production
numbers and 1,000 cos-
tumes. Robert Jani, Radio
City's inventive new pro-
ducer and chief executive
officer, and Thomas Bahler,
creative director, know of
no other "show" orchestra
in America that uses two
concert grand pianos•
Describing the Steinway
as "the number one piano,"
Mr. Jani points out that
"showcased as they are, the
twin Steinways are part of
the 'look' of the show."
They are raised above the
other instruments on an
18-inch platform and one
piano has a novel, see-
through top.
The mastermind of lavish
musical productions for
Disney World, Mr. Jani har-
bored "the dream of my
heart" to one day use a glass
top piano. While planning
the Radio City show, he
confided that dream to
Steinway & Sons, provider
of the Music Hall's official
piano since its opening in
1932.
Voile! A transparent top
was available. It had been

"flight" onto stage of Radio City Music Hall.
custom-made by Steinway
and first used in 1953 when
Dimitri Mitropoulos led the
New York Philharmonic in a
Carnegie Hall concert honor-
ing the 100th anniversary of
the renowned piano maker.
As the glitter of spotlights
rebound from the see-
through piano top, the 90-
minute music and dance
spectacular proclaims that
the recently-faltering Music
Hall is alive and well, offer-
ing a new brand of popular
family entertainment.
"Playing the Steinway
during the rebirth of this
great hall is a thrill," said
Ms. Mason, whose musical
background is rooted in the
classics, including solo
recitals at Lincoln Center
and Carnegie Hall. She also
performed popular music
in several Broadway
productions.
Unlike Mr. Viola, who has
been with the Radio City
orchestra for 26 years,
Ms. Mason is making her
Music Hall debut in the new
show, entitled "A New York
Summer."
Her natural talent for
playing popular music by
ear and her versatility
landed her the "job at Radio
City. "We were looking for
top flight pianists and other
musicians who were readily
facile in show and classical
music and with a fairly good
knowledge of jazz," ex-
plained associate musical
director Elman Anderson.
Recommended to
Anderson by a mutual
friend, Ms. Mason came to
a Music Halt audition, sat
down confidently at a
Steinway grand, and "put
everything I had into it."
She was hired on the soot.
Making the daily transi-
tion from classical to show
music to jazz that the show
demands is a "stimulating"
experience for Mr. Viola,
who trained at the Juilliard
School of Music and de-
scribes the new show as
having "a very fresh sound."
"It's as if they took all
the music done in the past
and put it into this one
show." Speaking of pro-
ducer Jani, the veteran Music
Hall pianist explains: "He
has a new and very different
concept of the orchestra as
an integral part of the show.
He wants it to be an impor-
tant part of the entertain-
ment and the best show
orchestra in New York."
Judging by the 'crowds
attending performances
since the show's early sum-
mer opening, it appears that
Robert Jani, a modern day
Florenz Ziegfeld, will make
the renaissance of Radio
City Music Hall a reality.
