From Page Five Summers County Profile brother to go get the cows, Putter (the one dog) jumped the fence and went to get them. He never learned that she wasn't talking to him. He'd grab the cows by the tail if they didn't co-operate; if they were on their way over a fence, he'd hang on. A group ofus boys would sometimes go back up on a hill away from every- one and camp the night. We didn't get much sleep, but we sure had a good time." Mary Elizabeth lived her child- hood days playing with the hove-- her brothers and their friends. On occasion (and they were special to her) vi si tors came. Or her gi rl friends from school would come to stay. Her family was warmly close and =care. fully supervised," she said. *Mother was 35 when I was born. If the tale. vision had been around then, I know that there was no way she would have allowed watching it. Mother read to us slot. When we would be bed sick, she would entertain us by letting us look through her postcard album. It was fascinating!* Ashby Mann was a smart stu- dent, attending Pisgah Elementary School, then Taleott High. He can still recount all of his teachers by name. So, too, can Mary Elizabeth. She attended Crossroads Elemen- tary at the top of Bacons Mt., near the Monroe County line. Then, she, too attended Talcott High where she met Ashby. They each parted ways after graduating. He worked 29 years at the railroad, then some at Hercu- les Powder, served in the Army, and fi nelly worked at the Big Bend Public Service Water Plant, before retiring in 1973 after having a stroke, one of three strokes suffered since. Mary Elizabeth became director of nurs- ing services for 31 years, after which the hospital closed and she worked as co-ordinator for the Summer's County Licensed Practical Nurses, sponsored by Board of Education. During this time, she lived at home, caring for her aging mother. One evening in 1977, a nurse friend of}mrs (wife to one of Ashby's boyhood singing buddies) invited Mary Elizabeth to dinner. She ac- cepted. Unknown to either, Ashby had also been invited. "I kept trying to remember what he was like in school, so long ago,* she recalled, " and all I could remember was that he'd had a lot of curly hair--I won- dered where it had all gone. And I remembered that he was on the debating team & singing group -- had a wonderful voice.* =I was looking for the perfect women and wife and mother," Ashby recounts, "and I knew I'd found her that evening, rd lost my wife re- cently, had four chldren--two girls still at home, and I was lonely. Mary Elizabeth met all of my standards absolutely. I,e been glad I found" her.* On Nov. 30, 1977, they mar- ried. They both enjoy reading, garden- ing, church activities, community work, and are members of Mt. Pis- gah Unitad Methodist Church. Mary Elizabeth is a member of the Hinton Woman's Club, and both are in the Ruritan, Eastern Star, and Ashby is a Mason. Many people know their daughters, local school teachers Debbie Bower.Talcott, Jane Meador. Hinton High School, Connie Buck- land-Talcott. They also have another daughter (twin to Connie), Bonnie Shilling, living in Oh. Recent illnesses and hosptial stays have prevented the Manna from doing a lot they'd like to do. What matters most to Ashby and Mary Elizabeth Mann is to be remem- bored as a friend.* To meet and get to know them, youll see they easily fulfill that goal.
