Obituaries
MR. CLARENCE WILLARD
ADKINS
Mr. Clarence Willard Adkins, 57,
of Hinton, died Sat. Aug. 3, 1991 in
the Summers County Hospital.
Mr. Adkins was a lifelong resi-
dent of Hinton and was born Apr. 12,
1934. He is the son of the late Oscar
and Esta Adkins.
Mr. Adkins was aretired employee
of the City of Hinton.
He was preceded in death by an
infant daughter Gloria Ann Adkins
and one brother Blaine Adldns.
Survivors include his wife Cath-
erine Thomas Adkins; one son, Clar-
ence Willard Adkins, Jr. at home;
three daughters, Cathy Adkins and
Lora Mac Adkins of Hinton; Sandra
IC Adkins at home; three brothers
Zina Adkins of Upland; Corbett and
Lewis Adkins both of Hinton; three
sisters Hallie Adkins of Hinton;
Genny Cook of Ellisen; Ida Cook of
Pipestem; three grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11:00 A.M.
Wed. at the Ronald Meadows Fu-
neral Parlors Chapel with the
Rev.Lawrence Bennett officating.
Burial will follow in the Hilltop
Cemetery.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m.
Tues. at the Ronald Meadows Fu-
neral Parlors, Hinton.
Nephews will serve as pallbear-

MRS. MARGARET A. BAKER
Mrs. Margaret Alice Baker, 66, of
Marie, Summers County, died Aug.
1, 1991, at Roanoke Memorial Hos-
pital and Rehabilitation Center,
Roanoke, Va., of a short illness.
Born Jan. 31, 1925, at Montgom-
ery, she was the daughter of Beulah
Belcher Stroud of Marie and the late
C.E. Stroud.
Mrs. Barker was a 30-year resi-
dent of Marie and former resident of
Beckley. She was ahomemaker and
a member of New Hope United
Methodist Church, Marie, and the
Marie Friendship Club.
She was preceded in death by her
husband, James Baker; a son, Char-
les R. Holdren, and a daughter, Linda
Lou Holdren.
Surviving: mother, Beulah Bel-
cher Stroud of Marie; daughter,
Marilyn Cooper of Marie; sister, Mrs.
(Lewis) Glenna Davis of Charlesten;
bther, C. E. Stroud Jr:ofRainelle;
three grandchildr;'Cone great
grandchild.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Sun.
Aug. 4 at the New Hope United
Methodist Church with the Rev.
Frank Mick officiating. Burial fol-
lowed in the church cemetery. The
body was at the Ronald Meadows
Funeral Home, Hinton, and at the
church one hour prior to services.
Nephews served as pallbearers.
JAMEsLEE PLUMLEY
James Lee Flumley, 33, of 224
North 19th. Street Richmond, Ind.,
died Tues. July 30, 1991 in Reid
Memorial Hospital in Richmond,
Ind., following a short illness.
Born June 19, 1958 at Hinton,
W.Va., he was the son of Ruseell Lee
Plumley and Annetia Caldwell
Plumley of Richmond, Ind.
Mr. Plumley was a former em-
ployee of Emperial Products CO. in
Richmond, Ind. He attended
Richmond Senior High School and
had served in the Marines.
Survivorsinclude his wife Rebecca
Whitten Plumley; one brother Timo-
thy W. Plumley of Richmond; three
sisters, Aleta Rsece of Richmond,
Gina Plumley of Richmond, and
Kamey of Richmond; paternal grand-
father, Evely of Abraham; also sur.
vived by nephews, nieces, aunts,
uncles and cousins.
Funeral services were held Fri.
Aug. 2n& at the Doann Mills Fu-
neral Home in Richmond, Ind. at
10:00 A.M. Burial followed in the
Earleham Cemetery at Richmond,
Ind.
CONNIE ALONZO WARD
Connie Alonzo Ward, 38, died
Tues. July 30, 1991, at his home,
following a self hanging, according
to the Summers County Sheriff's
Department.
Born July 2, 1953, at Brooks, he
was the son of Spurgoon and Mary
Bragg Ward of Keatley Springs.
Other survivors include three
brothers, Gary, David and James
Ward, all of Hinton, and six sisters,
Barbara Sears, Betty Woodrum,
Margie Gross, Peggy Meadows, and
Carol Ward, all of Hinton and Debra
Toler of Roanoke, Va.
Graveside services were held at
11 a.m. Thurs. Aug. 1, at the Fox
Cemetery, BrooRs with the Rev.
James Toler officiating.
The body was at the E.M. Mead-
ows Funeral Home, Hinton.
FRANKLIN H. WARD
Franklin H. Ward, 64, of Sand-
stone, died Aug. 2, 1991, at home of
a short illness.
He was a retired school teacher
and a World War II veteran. He was
a member of the Laural Creek Bap-
tist Church, Ramp.
Surviving: wife, Martha Virginia
Sters Ward; son, Thomas F. of Hin-
ton; daughter, Beverly Jean of Prin-
ceton;brother, Charles of Pembroke,
N.C.; sisters, Dorothy Dick of Blue-
field, Violet French of Roanoke, Vs.;
Edith Kersey of Nitro; two grand-
children.
Services were held at 2:30 p.m.
Mon. AUg. 4 at the E.M. Meadows
Funeral Home, Hinten, with the Rev.
Eddie Johnson officiating. Burial
followed in the Coopers Cemetery,
Sandstone.
JOHN R.WH-LEY
John R. Willey, 61, was dead on
arrival at 3:20 p.m. Wed. July 31,
1991, in a Hinton hospital, following
a short illness.
Born Aug. 2, 1929, at Hinton, he
was the son of the late Arthur A. and
Nell Maddy Willey.
A lifelong resident of Hinton, Mr.
Willey was a retired conductor for
the C&O Railway Company and a
Korean War veteran. He was a
member of the First Baptist Church,
Hinton, the United Transportation
Union and Brotherhood of Railway
Trainman.
He was co-owner of the Summers
Ready Mix and Willey Brothers Well
Drilling and Excavating Company.
He was preceded in death by a
brother, C. Eddie Willey, and a sis-
ter, Mary Katherine McLean.
Survivors include his wife, June
Cales Willey, and a brother, Arnett
A. Willey of Hilldale.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Sun.
Aug. 4 at the First Baptist Church,
Hinton, with the Rev. Mille Holcomb
and the Inspirations officiating.
Burial followed in the Greenbrier
Burial Park, Hinton.
The body was at the E.M. Mead-
ows Funeral Home, Hinton, and one
hour prior to the services at the
church.
Pallbearers were Buzzy Hellems,
Jim Tassos, Ashby Maddy, Charlie
Bare, Bill Osborne, Russell and
Burman Gill, James Bolt, Terry
Meadows, Bob Maddy, Jack Willey
Jr., Lawrence Bennett and Bud
Shanks.
MRS. MILDRED M.
WOODRUM
Mrs. Mildred M. Woodrum, 78, of
Hinton, died Aug. 1, 1991, at Sum-
mers County Hospital, Hinton, after
a long illness.
She was retired from the Sum-
mers County Sheriff's Dept. and was
a member of the First Baptist
Church, Hinton, and the Order of
the Eastern Star, the Fidelis Class
of the church. She was a lifelong
resident of Summers County.
She was preceded in death by her
first husband, Harry Surbaugh.
Surviving: husband Jess E.
Woodrum; sons, Edward Surbaugh
of Radcliff, Ky.; Steve Surbaugh of
East Detroit, Mich.; daughter,
Brenda McCoy of Hinton; sisters,
Goldie McGhee of Hinton, Evelyn
Phillips of Ashland, Ky.; four grand-
children; two great-grandchildren.
Services were held at 4 p.m. Sun.
Aug. 4 at the E.M. Meadows Funeral
Home, Hinton, with the Rev. Bruce
Creswell and the Rev. C.H. Martin
officiating. Burial followed in the
Greenbrier Burial Park, Hinton.
Men of the church served as pall-
bearers.
JOY E. ZICKAFOOSE
Miss Joy Elizabeth Zickafoose, 15,
formerly of Claypool, died Tues. July
30,1991, in Florence, S.C., following
a car accident, according to a hospi-
tal nursing supervisor.
Born Dec. 14,1975, at Hinton, she
was the daughter of John and Nancy
Cangialosi Zickafoose.
Miss Zickafoose was a student at
the Wilson High School in Florence
and was a member of the Church of
God in Hinton.
Other survivors include three
brothers and three sisters.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Sat.
Aug. 3 at the Smathers Funeral
Home Chapel, Rainelle with the Rev.
Cecil Welch officiating. Burial fol-
lowedin the Gwinn Cemetery, Green
Sulphur Springs.

60th Wedding Anniversary
Norvel and Violet (Hartwell)
Turner were honored with a sur-
prise sixtieth wedding anniversary
celebration in Beckley at the home
of their daughter, Mrs. Judy Crook.
Since their marriage by Rev. H.P.
Hackney on Apr. 15,1931, the couple
has resided in the Hinton Area.
Norvel is retired from the C & O
Railroad where he worked as a con-
ductor, and Violet continues to be a
homemaker.
• The couple are the proud parents
of eight children - seven living: Carole
Cantre]] and Melvin Turner of Hin-
ton, Shirley Lilly, Nancy Duff, Leroy
Turner of Richmond, Vs., Hazel Allen
of Flint, Mich., and Judy Crook of
Beckley; sixteen grandchildren and
six great-grandchildren.
Those attending and enjoying the

Gilbert, W.Va. areproud to announce
the birth of their 3rd child a son,
Bryan Matthew, born July 12th. at
Logan General Hospital weighing 9
lbs. 111/4 ounces and 22 incheelong.
Bryan Matthew is the grandson
of Dan & Agnes Adkins of True and
Ray & Jean Huffman of Gilbert,
Bryan is the great grandson of
Roy & Alice Goodall of Cleveland,
Oh., and Mrs. Edrie Adkins of Hill-
dale.
Bryan Matthew has two older
sisters Carrie and Samantha.

SPC Jerry P. Boggess, formerly of
Ghent and Carla J. (Weiss) Boggess,
formerly of Jumping Branch, now of,
Kitzingen, West Germany are proud
to announce the birth of their second
son, Bryan Seth Boggess, born June
16th. at Wurzburg Army Hospital in
W. Germany.
He weighed 8 lbs. 2 oz. and was 20
inches long.
Maternal grandparents are
Daniel and Melissa Ward of Sand-
stone, W.Va. are happy to announce
the birth of their first child. Their
son, Dennis Matthew, arrived on
Thurs. July 11, at 10:01 p.m. at
Humana Hospital Greenbrier Val-
ley. Dennis weighed 9 lbs. 4.2 ozs.
and was 20 in. long.

W.Va.
Paternal grandparents are Glen
and Mary Ward of Sandstone, W.Va.
