How To Watch a Race:
The true beauty of this week's
racing lies in the multiples races
going on within each actual heat.
From start to finish, drivers are
challenged to overcome a variety of
obstacles in order to be the first to
the checkered flag.
Each class of racing consists of
two heats. Points are awarded for
finishing .positions in each heat,
then combined to determine the
winner. In case of a tie on points,
the driver with the fastest overall
time for both heats is awarded the
higher position.
For safety reasons, a maximum
of twelve boats are allowed in any
heat. When more than twelve are
registered, the boats are divided into
elimination heats. At the National
Championships, the number of
open slots for the final varies. The
defending National Champion is
automatically qualified and up
to four Divisional Champions are
automatically seeded. Thus there
could be as few as seven opening in
the finals.
A heat of racing begins when the
green flag flies at the judges stand.
All boats then have two minutes to
leave the pits and enter the race

the course during this period.
After two minutes, the white
flag flies on the judges stand and in
the turn boats. At the same time,
a large clock on the judges stand
continues ticking down to zero.
Drivers work into position when
passing a the 500' buoy (generally
the last buoy in the second turn).
They can choose any lane they
like as long as they don't interfere
with another boat or change lanes
once they pass the 500' buoy. Some
drivers prefer the inside, while
other like the outside.
The ultimate goal for drivers is to
cross the starting line at full speed
just as the clock reaches zero. Any
boat that crosses early (jumps the
gun as we say) is disqualified and
receives no points for the heat. All
starts are videotaped for review.:°:
From there, the race is Ol~:
Safety rules prohibit certain driving-
infractions, like cutting off another::
driver or intentionally driving wide
to interfere with another boat, on:
the outside. :t-
Drivers must not only dodge tllei~
competitors, but they must read the
water and wind to determine which
is the best line around the course:
Drivers will often change lanes in
order to find clean water-meaning

by a leading boat..

COMMUNITY SUPPORT
The Hinton Lions Club is asking
for the Communities support :i~n

eye examinations or eye glasses.
The Hinton Lions have been
providing assistance for over 18
years and are asking community
organizations and businesses as• well
as citizens for monetary donations

and oil of lemon eucalyptus and
wear repellents during all times
when outdoors.
