A petition protesting the loca-
tion of a solid waste transfer
station on 17th Ave. was pre-
sented to the City Council Tue.
night.
The petitioners, 64 residents
of the West End, were repre-
sented at the meeting by
former councilman Stuart
Oxley.
Oxley, at the outset of the
meeting, asked the Council "to
reconsider" the installation of a
"garbage transfer station on
the West End.
"Put it some where else," he
said.
"We already have the sewage
treatment plant," Oxley contin-
ued, "and we'll have to live
with that the rest of our lives."
Oxley said they did not want
anything "new that would be
detrimental to the commun-
ity."
Mayor James A. Leslie said
he would agree "if it were
detrimental to not only the
WestEnd but any section" of
Hinton. Leslie said when instal-
ling a transfer station was first
presented he "was very much
opposed to it." Leslie said after
looking at a transfer station in
operation "I was amazed at the
cleanliness."
"It's all concrete and metal.
It's just like your trash com-
pactor at home. There was no
food ~,l~tance. l~re was
nothing visible. It was as dry
as could be. I was amazed."
said.
The Mayor asked Oxley to go
with him and "look at one. I
think it would be good to at
least go look at one and find out
what we are talking about."
Councilman Fred Long said
the application for funding of
the station had been rejected.
"That is not to say that we are
not going to try other means to
the money," he pointed
out.
"I wish that you would find
another place," Oxley said.
"It worries me that three
residents of the area sit on the
Council now and are not going
to take their area of the town
into consideration any further
than what they apparently
have. We have other places."
'~hree members are serving
and worrying about it," Mayor
Leslie said. "But we feel
exactly theoppmite about it. If
it was a bad thing I wouldn't
propose it for anywhere in the
City. We don't have to propese
