Sholarship to be
Founded
Plans are currently in progress to
establish a scholarship in the name
of former Hinton High Schodl
Football Coach, William L. "Bill"
Garten. Coach Garten was the head
football coach at Hinton High School
from 1957 to 1979 and during that
time achieved a record of 140 -#ins,
88 losses and 2 ties. Hinton was the
"AA" runners-up in 1963 and won
the "AA" Football Championship in
1968.
Coach Garten graduated from
Fayetteville High School in 1945. He'
attended Concord College where he
received 11 letters, 4 in football, 4
in basketball and 3 in baseball. He
left Concord in 1950 to play minor
league baseball for the Chicago
Cubs. He was drafted into the US
Army in 1952 and returned to
Concord in 1954 to finish his degree.
He began his career at Hinton High
School in 1954 as an aistant coach
and taught Physical Education and
Social Studies.
A fund raising event is being
planned for Labor Day weekend to
include a golf tournament, cookout,,
and dance at Willow Wood Country

Molly Ann Rldmond
Birth Announced
Roy and Kristi Richmond of
Hinton are proud to announce the
birth of their first child, a daughter
named Molly Ann.
Molly was born April 22, 1999 and
weighed 7 pounds and 9.4 ounces.
Grandparents are Donnie and
Beverly Ward of Cool Ridge, and
Jimmy and Jo Ann Richmond of
Hinton. Maternal great-
grandparents are Marie Bennett of
Jumping Branch and Bob and Betty
Ward of Daniels. Paternal great-
grandmother is Berthal Richmond
of Hinton.

The Summers County Board of
Education is now applications for
substitute aides, substitute
custodians, substitute cooks, and
substitute bus drivers.
Applicant must meet the
following qualifications:
1. High School graduate or GED,
2. Physically fit to perform all duties
related to the applied position, 3.
Successfully passed the State
Development Skills Test, and 4. All
other requirements set forth by the
WV Code and the Summers County
B.ard of Education.

Six members of the Hinton Business & Professional Women's
Club attended the West Virginia Interim Board meeting at
Fainnont on June 19. Plans and goals for the coming club year

Jennifer IV[. Richmond
Jennifer M. Richmond of Talcott
has been designated as a 1999-2000
Patrick Henry Scholar at Emory &
Henry College. The award is the
highest given to a student in the
entering first-year class and
includes a scholarship which may
have a value up to $34,000 over the
course of four years of study.
For the first year, Richmond will
receive a $8,500 scholarship, and
provided she meets criteria set by
the college, the amount will be
renewed during each subsequent
year in college.
To be considered for the award,
the student must have ranked in the
top five percent of his or her high
school class. Also considered are
scores on college entrance
examinations and evidence of
leadership and character.
Richmond is a graduate of
Summers County High School were
she was co-valedictorian of her class.
On campus, she was a member of the
National Honor Society, Hi-Y, the
yearbook staff, Future Business
Leaders of America and the Bible
Club. Richmond was a participant
in the 1998 West Virginia Governor's
Honors Academy and was a 1999
Energy Express Mentor. Active in
athletics, she was named All-
Coalfield Conference honorable
mention in basketball and softball.
WV Writers, Inc. Competition Winners
Area writers won honors in four ' West Virginia Writers, Inc. began
categories in this year's West 'in 1977 as an organization to
address the needs of writers by
sponsoring workshops, conferences
and competitions. With funding
from the West Virginia Humanities
Council and the West Virginia
Commission on the Arts, it has also
brought the popular Circuit Writers
program to all regions of the state.

Virginia Writers, Inc. competition,
which attracted more than 800
entries. Sarah Allen, of Summers
County, took first place in the short
story category wth "Bones."
In the student short story
category Mesha Maren-Hogan, of
Greenbrier County, placed third
with "Llano Estacado," and three
Nicholas County residents won
honorable mentions: Malte
Ogurreck for'Unfinished Revenge,"
Jamie Henline for "Eyes of Glass,"
and Racheal Rose with "The
Mechanical Man."
Rebecca Ann Adair Aide, of"
Greenbrier County, won an
honorable mention in the student
article/essay category for her The
Way I See Him."
In the short story collection
category Doris K. Dooley, of Nicholas
County, took fourth place with "First
Annual," and Belinda Anderson, of
Greenbrier County, won an
honorable mention for "The Well
Ain't Dry Yet."
All winners were announced at
the annual conference held June 11-
13 at Cedar Lakes. Belinda
Anderson, of Asbury (Greenbrier
County) was elected 1st Vice-
President for Publications at the
business meeting. She has served for
the past year as Regional
Representative for Region 3, which
includes Greenbrier, Monroe,
Nicholas, and Summers Counties.
The new representative for this
region will be John N. Mugaas, of
Lcwisburg, Grecnbricr County.

LOCAL STUDENTS
Concord College has announced
several scholarship recipients for the
1999-2000 academic year. The
following students are among those
who have earned recognition:
Amanda Richmond has been
awarded the Ruritan Foundation
Matching Scholarship. Amanda is a
1999 graduate from Summers
County High School where she has
participated in Hi-Y, Bible Club, and
several other church activities. Her
awards include membership in the
National Honor Society, and the
Hulme Scholar. Amanda is the
daughter of Ralph and Janet
Richmond who reside at Hinton.

QUILT SHOW
The 1999 WV State Water
Festival Quilt Show will be held
Aug. 5-7 at the Summers County
Middle School gymnasium. The
show will be sponsored by the J. BJ
Nimitz Community Outreach
Service Club (formerly Extension
Homemakers).
Registration will be Wed., Aug.
4th. from 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM at the
gym. Pick-up of quilts will be Sat.,
Aug. 7th.

ribbons to People's Choice, First,
