from 2000 we must be prepared for
what the next couple of years may
bring.
Many have voiced their concerns
as to whether our state will be ready
to deal with new possible health care
issues that are predicted to arise.
As chair for the Legislative
Oversight Commission on Health
and Human Resources
Accountability, I am pleased to
report that public health seems to
be concentrating on plans for the
future. Chris Gordon, Legislative
Liaison for the Bureau for Public
Health presented committee
members with a Healthy People
2010 report Monday, July 12.
Increasing the quality and years
of healthy life, along with
eliminating disparities are the
%verarching goals for this
program. It aims at preventing
and reducing diseases and
disorders, and focuses on emerging
health issues for 2000 and beyond.
According to Gordon, Healthy
People 2010 should improve systems
for personal and public health by
offering better access to quality
health services and by creating a
family planning, maternal, infant
and child health program. This
initiative will also loog rote memcal
product safety, public health
infrastructure and health
communication, as well.
The director of the Children's
Health Insurance Program (CHIP-
insurance for working families)
brought committee members up-to
date on where the program currently
stands.
As of July 9, 1999, 873 children
were enrolled in Phase I and 2,574
in Phase II. Dental benefits were
recently amended and will be
distributed to dental providers
throughout the state because of a
cooperative agreement with the
West Virginia Dental Association.
The director also noted that a
school-based CHIP promotion is
being geared for this fall. The
Healthy Kids Coalition, CHIP and
the Charleston Newspapers are
planning to distribute a newspaper
insert, which will be used as a
teaching tool to explbin and promote
children's health, preventive health
care and the CHIP program.
As we continue to address health
care issues during the interim
meetings and hear from health care
officials, I hope this state will be
ready for the future.
As always, if you have any
legislative questions or concerns,
please do not hesitate to call me or
Paul Miller by phone at 340-3190 or
by mail at State Capitol Complex,
Building 1, Room 208-E, Charleston,
WV 25305.
