University Women Meet The Hinton Branch of the A.A.U.W. met June 18th. at the Pence Springs Hotel for their an- nual brunch to end the year 1990- 1991 season and to celebrate the scholarship winner. This year, Pamela Fox was unable to attend, so her essay =A Contemporary Ameri- can Woman who has Influenced my Life was read to the group by Mrs. Marilyn McLean. Miss Fox is the daughter of Reverend and Mrs. William Fox. She plans to attend the University of Charleston, majoring in Nursing Education. The business meeting concerned the payment of dues and program ideas for the 1991-1992 year, start- ing in Sept. The theme is Educa- tional Equity for Women and Girls. Those members who were not at the meeting may contribute their ideas The Pence Springs Hotel Popular Wedding Site Inmates housed in the W.Va. State Prison for Women in the late 1940s enjoyed their incarceration in what was formerly a luxury resort for the wealthy. Before its conversion into a state prison, the Pence Springs Hotel, located in the gently rolling hills of the beautiful Greenbrier River Val- ley, served as a retreat for those seeking the curative waters of the area's mineral springs. During its conversion from a prison back. to a resort, bars were removed from all the bedroom win- dows and the rooms were entirely redecorated with more suitably comfortable furnishings. Today the hotel has attained 90% restoration. Although it has been renovated, some reminders of prison days re- main. The same heavy metal doors still serve as portals to each room and are attached firmly to their frames by five sturdy hinges. Formerly used by guards to check on inmates, the flaps covering round glass windows on each door, have been reversed from the outside to the inside of each room. Now guests can look through the peepholes to see who is knocking before opening their doors. On the third floor, tiny maximum security cells, with their dark steel Victorian structure burned in 1912 and was replaced with a 60-room hotel by the Pence family. Roaring through the 1920s' the Georgian mansion played host to good-timing guests who paid $6 a day to be pamperedby a staffof 100. The Prohibition did not hinder guests from enjoying the hotel's stash of whiskey imported from Ky. or bought locally from Summers County moon shiners. After the stock market crash of 1929, and the advent of private automobile travel, business slowed and the hotel closed permanently in 1935. The property was purchased by the State of W.Va, and became the state's first prison for women in 1947. Then, due to rising costs, the prison was forced to close in 198 Summers County restaurateur Ashby Berkley worked to get the hotel placed on the National Regis- ter of Historic Places and bought it in 1987, when the state was forced to sell. Berkley admired the hotel's te- nacity in surviving the destructive flood of 1985, after his own restau- rant, the Riverside Inn, closed for nearly a year due to flood damage. After 18 months of extensive renovations, the famous old =Spas of the Virginians reopened on Thank giving Day, 1988. Currently, 26 rooms (15 units) are open, which sleep approximately 50-52 people. Just over the hill from the resort, down a winding path through the woods, is the hotel's namesake, Pence Springs. The restorativ spring water was distinguished with a sil- ver medal at the St. Louis World's Fair in 1904. Another nearby attraction is Big Bend Tunnel, where John Henry lost his life racing with a steam drill. Anglers will delight in the excellent fishing at Sandstone Falls, and his- tory buffs will enjoy exploring nearby historic Hinton or historic Lewis- burg.
