Last week I told yOU about the °? :Red Tide team that :our girls AAU Team faced. It was, an awesome s team who won the tournament. I I mentioned that I wanted every ,i,] player, parent and coach to read an article that the head coach of that organization wrote. a:e I read it and I learned a lot! There '" is something in there for any player, ,"" parent or coach in any sport. It :m y. too long for one sports' article so'! will break t up in parts. We can all .c learn from reading thisifwe follow some advice. " Clip his article out !and save it. . Substitute his local tidewater VA ,. references wth our WV options. Dreams of glory don't end with the final buzzer.. They live on...Pushing the athlete to compete one more time. Today! r Mike Ellion,.: + By . How to become,aPlayer! " First of all girls do not have access to the court and gym time that boys do. Every school I visit during the summer has open gym time and leagues for the boys. Girls .on tim other hand have only the Boo Willams AAU Summer league to Fplay in. So they have to overcome I these obstacles. I I • requires a commitment of just about every weekend for practice and. games plus at least I or 2 practices per week. You can just tell the difference when you see the AAU players on the court vs. non-AAU players. So those of you who think you will be good by shooting aroupd in the back yard you are only partially right. You need to playAAU to have a chance at being a really good ball player. Next you have to get your parents to support you. You can't be daddy's little girl out on the court. Youhave to approach the game with an aggressive mind set. Next yo u have to work hard on your game. You have no idea how many conversations I have had with Dad's that tell me how great a "driveway player" their daughters are. I then watch these players shoot around and see them taking 2 or 3 seconds to just get ready to shoot. Their parents think they are all world. They then get upset when an AAU player, goes against them and plays killer D. You then hear all the shouts of "someone come help her out" when their daughter is playing. Parents you have change your mindset and see your daughter as a player. Does she have a jump shot or a set shot? Can she dribble with her head up with both hands, does she cross her feet or slide on defense? Do you take her to YMCA or other rec. centers and have her go against the guys? These are all the things your daughter should work on or be doing. Don't get me wrong it is OK to play basketball as an activity but if you want to be good you have to do most if not all the things I am telling you here. Next you need to go to some camps. I once had a player who had a terrible hitch in her shot. I showed her how to shoot correctly, a camp coach showed her too. Her dad did it was OK, now as shehas gotten older she gets her shot swatted just about eve time. My point is take your kids to,camp and let some others teach them how to play, then support they're teaching. My own daughter improved her ,shooting by going to clamp. Even though I thought my way of teaching was the best (don't all dads) itwasn't. Only through camp did my daughter get better. Allow your daughter to experience the reality of sports. They are going to win some games they should not, and lose some they should win. They will ,have good coaches and bad ones. You won't always like the other parents on the team nor willthey think you are greatest person they ever met either. They could give a wit about your job, how much ,money y)u make or anything else about you. So don't try and impress them. They are there for only one reason and that is their daughter. . ..,:.$,. Next week we will continue this article sectiop about "How to become a good player." There are other sections as well about Attitude, Work Ethic, What College Coaches look for, Parents and Academics. Parents if you have children "boys or girls" I suggest you cut this continuing article out of future issues and save it. It can be like a handbook on helping your children to succeed. -Brian SWITCH I0 OIRECTV TODAY! OFFER ENOS 7/26/03. Children in Mrs. Vicki Cales's first grade class learned that studying martial arts increases self-confidence and pride balanced by healthy humility and independence. This graceful physical accomplishment is about valuing peace and gentleness over the path of violence by preparing one to avoid fights if at all possible. While these children enjoyed this lesson in coordination and sportsmanship, they learned a more important art that all ages would be wise to master: We are responsible to our art, our families, our community, and our country. Good manners and courtesy are our best and most effective weapons and assets. Victory will last a few minutes, but our integrity will last a lifetime and will benefit all around us. Mr. Tom Graham demonstrates martial arts to first graders in Mrs. Vicki Cales's class at Jumping Branch Elementary School.
