Some of the comments are like unto remarks of some of the old sidekicks in western movies, "Them dadburn critters done gone too far!" The fact of the matter is, the Supreme Court of the US should be Conservative by a seven to two majority. The only two Associate Justices of the Supreme Court, who were appointed by a Democrat President, are Steven G. Breyer and Ruth Bader Ginsburg. They were both appointed by President Bill Clinton. The other seven Justices were appointed by Republican Presidents. The list is as follows: Clarence Thomas Aug. 23, 1991, Appointed by President G. W. Bush. David H. Souter Aug. 9, 1990, Appointed by President G. W. Bush. Anthony Kennedy Dec. 18, 1988, .J Servicemen In The News Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Eric M. Harvey, son of Sandra R. Harvey of Hinton and Richard Moore of Jumping Branch, recently completed a two-week bilateral training exercise with Albanian military forces while assigned to the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), based in Camp Lejeune, N.C. The unit is currently aboard the USS Iwo Jima. Harvey is one of more than 4,000 Pacific Fleet Sailors and Marines who deployed aboard the ships of the USS lwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group. Drawing upon lessons learned in recent operatio.ns in Mosul, Iraq, Harvey's unit sought to create a training exercise that included every element of the MEU with specific emphasis on combat service support of secure'convoy procedures. RAILROAD '.00RECOLLECTIONS By Roy C. Long The village of Hamlet, W. Va., was no small community in the hey-day of the single band sawmill. There was a three or four story club house operated by Mr. Marvin Lacy where rooms were rented and meals served family style. There was also a boarding house that was run by Mrs. Ward Hudson. A teacher at Hamlet elementary school was Haven Clay who taught Mr. Jack Ward of Hinton, W. VA., his first year of schooling. His family, Arrow and Dolly Ward, lived at Hamlet one year and then moved across the river to Glade. Other teachers at the Hamlet school were: Miss Maxine Hopkins, who later married the C&O Agent at Glade, Mr. C. Stanley Sweet, and the last teacher, Susie Ranson, who boarded at Glade with Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Brandt and walked the bridge to and from the school building. The post office serving the two communities of Hamlet and Glade was located at hamlet until the sawmill went out of business. There was a doctor's office at Hamlet. Some of the doctors serving the two communities were: Dr. King; Dr. Wilson; Dr. McClung; Dr. J. W. Stokes and Dr. J. T. Johnson. Dr. Stokes will long be remembered by GLADE AND HAMLET, Villages Of Yesteryear In The New River Gorge; Part 4. In 1929 the Glade Creek Coal and Lumber Company sold their property to Babcock Coal and Timber Company. Mr. George Beam was General Superintendent and Mr. Edward Jones, Superintendent. Edward Jones let a contract to his brother Joe Jones to cut a tract of timber and bring the logs out of the woods to the railroad. Mr. Joe Jones employed his son, Roy E. Jones, and about twenty laborers to cut the timber and skid the logs with teams of horses to designated locations for the log train. This group of men lived in a logging camp two and one-half miles from Hamlet up Glade Creek. Some of the employees of Babcock Coal and Timber Company were: Ernest Dillon, the Blacksmith; John Hopkins, the Sawyer and Jim Osborne, the Lumber Grader. Coal was never mined along the route of the railroad. There was some talk about constructing a coal tipple at Glade but the mines never developed and when the bridge girders were removed from the bridge at Glade, W. Va., all hope was gone. RAHALL REPORT Will We See History Repeat Itself? In mid 20th century, the United States faced a health care crisis. Here, in the early 21st century, the United States faces an eerily similar situation, and again we have returned to an age-old question: Should health care for the elderly and disabled individuals be run by the volatile private, for profit corporations or left in the secure hands of the collective wisdom and watchful eye of the people through their elected government? In the early 1950s, the Social Security system, an economic safety was the lack of affordable health care coverage for our seniors that led our Nation to create Medicare in the first place. And, as the old saying goes, =those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it." Today, what is proposed will hand the elderly and disabled individuals over to the private insurer, who have long considered these individuals a so-called "bad risk." And, they would be given unchecked power to not only design the new prescription drug plans, but also decide what to charge, with no provisions in the the people of Hinton, Stokes Drive being named in his honor. Soon after Dr. Stokes was married, he and his young bride came to Hinton and set up house keeping in a house on Temple Street near the toll bridge. Although their new home had been vacant for quite a long time and rumors were to the effect the house was haunted, they were unafraid and scoffed at such rumors. All went well for the newly weds until the night of Wednesday, February 25, 1925, when their house seemed to be besieged with ghosts. It was an eerie night and hearing strange noises, Dr. Stokes arose from the bed and went to the door to see what was the matter. To his astonishment, when he reached the door it slowly opened without his aid. He shut the door, locked and bolted it but the spooks were not to be deterred by such a little thing. A moment after he had bolted the door it stood wide open with the bolt pushed back by some invisible force. That was not all. A cold blast of winter air filled the room blowing in from windows which they had not opened. Apparently believing they had not scared their victims enough, the ghosts seized hold of the bed and moved it about on the castors. At that point the good Doctor and Mrs. Stokes decided that enough was enough and left the house declaring they would not return. Dr. and Mrs. Stokes were told their house was the same in which Margaret Youell had committed suicide in 1923. Since then the house had no steady occupants. People had come and gone but no one seemed willing to live there very long. Dr. and Mrs. Stokes could easily relate to that. There were about twenty five or thirty private homes in Hamlet when the sawmill was in full operation. Mrs. Grace Brandt remembers when she visited Glade Appointed by President Ronald Harvey's unit is an expeditionary net for our elderly citizens, was legislation that would hold down the in 1921 there was only about five Re • • , £nte-+; fore, with the °hap,, + failing, to vrotect seniors from the vrices charged by thbig dru:-n • :. agan. -.. .... Today, according to the Office of the Democratic Leader, instead of furthering Medicare's initiative to provide the best health care possible at affordable costs for our seniors and disabled, we are taking a long established program and making those who depend on it to choose a private plan that will raise their costs of care in order to get a prescription drug plan. Proponents of changing Medicare to rely on the private sector believe it would produce competition among plans that would drive down costs and increase choices for consumers. However, if you look to the past, it guarantee seniors' access to, prescription drugs, and it would not lessen the overlying cost of health care. It would put the burden of prescription drug cost on seniors and people with disabilities, the very people who depend on the safe economic foundation of Medicare for health insurance. This model is counter to the principles of affordable health care for all, upon which the Medicare program was built. Thirty-five years ago, Medicare was the answer for unaffordable private plans, but today some are looking towards private plans as answers to Medicare and prescription drug coverage for our elderly and disabled.
