1929 AND FIFTY YEARS
HENCE: A TEACltER
FULFILLS A PROMISE
,,L
d
O
On a snow y day in Febr-
uary 1929 a class of seniors at
Green Sulphur District High
School were discussing the
many changes having taken
place since George Washington
was president. Mr. Robert E.
Via, adviser to the class and
principal of the school promised
the cla that in fifty years he
would invite them to dinner and
they could discuss the changes
of our fifty years.
On a beautiful sunny day,
June 2, 1979 "RIVERSIDE INN
" on the beautiful Greenbrier
River was the setting for iVh..
Via and six of his class of ten
seniors. Two members of the
o class ( Clara Bragg and Ralph
I Gillian) are deceased. Two
members ( Zeima Bragg and
Pauline Redes) were unable to
return for his golden anniver-
sary.
From the very beginning this
class was unique. It was be-
_ cause of the encouragement of
their parents and other int-
O crested citizens that in 1925 the
District Board of Education
- agreed to accept the offer of Dr.
I B.B. Richmond of two acres of
land if they would build a four
room building. A resolution was
passed by the Board to begin
one year of high school and to
add each year as needed until
four years of high school would
, be available for youth in this
, rural area of Summers County.
" Other mdque features of this
class are: they participated in
/ four graduation exercises, the
/ family name of one half of the
,11 class was Bragg , one memb,
er was only fifteen years old anti
her desire was to be sixteen, two
members had taught school
before competing high school,
they were rural youth who
really wanted further educat-
tormi opportunities, they had
parents who were truly inter-
ested in them, and they were
most fortunate to have had the
following teachers: Miss Pearl
Noel, Miss Blanch Skaggs, Mr.
Robert E. Via, Mr. C.D. Mc-
Cormick, Mr. C.E. Roth and
Mrs. Phoebe Roth.
It didn't take a Pauley vs.
Kelly case or a Supreme Court
decision for their teachers to
define and implement a "Th-
orough and Efficient" public
school program. Their four year
curriculum colmisted of : four
years of English, 1st, and 2nd.
.year Latin, High School Math,
Alegbra, Geometry, Genera[
Science, Biology, Chemistry,
Civics, American and World
Histories, and an activity per-
led for Music, Art, Physical
Educe(tun and School Organiz-
ations. Vocational Agriculture
wM added In the second year
and Home Economics in the
fourth year.
Many of the reflections at his
reunion were on the facts taught
by the teachers that had ser-
4 ved them well in their car-
eers. They also reflected on the
changes since '29 in transport-
ation, communication, technol.
gy, medical science and the
Cultural advantages. The fact
that all had been involved and
were still interested in educat-
ion their conversation would
tmon turn back to schools. They
• were. aware of the trend and
tmmetimes the need for consol-
idation; However they conclud-
ed that "Bigger is not necess -r
arlly better."
AS fifty year grads and an
ongoing tnterest in student they
had two wishes for youth of the
future. One, that they could
:have parents with as much
concern for them as their had
and secondly, that the
