Public Employees Insurance Open Mon. - Sat. 9 - 9 - Closed Appalachian Power Company plans to maintain a portion of its power line rights-of-way in West Virginia through aerial spraying of registered herbicides. Weather permitting, the program will begin on or about June 4, 1990. Questions about the program or information about sensitive areas near the power lines listed below, such as springs, wells, streams, lakes, ponds, orchards, crop areas, gardens, pastures, meadows, year-round dwellings, public recreation areas and Christmas tree plants, may be directed to the company by calling toll-free 1-800-642.3622. Information about sensitive areas may also be mailed or delivered to any Appalachian Power qffice as listed below. It is important when reporting sensitive areas to be specific about the location by giving the pole or tower number nearest the sensitive area. Numbers are posted on utility poles and on the legs of utility towers. Rights-of.way maintenance agreements between Appalachian and landowners are available to those preferring to accept responsibility for clearing the right-of-way crossing their property, rather than for herbicides to be applied aerially. Such agreements provide for compensation equivalent to the cost of aerial herbicide maintenance, provided the work meets the company's specifications. Landowners desiring to enter into a right-of-way maintenance agreement with Appalachian Power should use the toll-free number given above or contact the nearest office as listed below. Maps showing the location of rights- of-way to be sprayed in their areas are also available for inspection at these offices, Herbicides to be used have been extensively tested and are registered by the Environmental Protection Agency and the West Virginia Department of Agriculture. They are Glysophate, Propionic, Triclopyr, Imidazol, Picloram and Fosamine. Rights,of-way in this area Involved in the program are: Greenbrler, Monroe, and Summers Counties -Hinton-Westvaco 138kV Line: A transmission line on steel towers beginning at Hinton Station one mile east of Hinton and extending in a northeasterly direction. The line passes near the intermediate points of Pence Springs, Rockland, Ronceverte, and Harts Run before ending at a point one mile south of O'Neil Knob on the Virginia/West Virginia state line. Complaints about possible damage resulting from herbicides may be made by contacting the company over the above toll-frea number, or by writing or visiting the local office listed below. Complaints may also be directed to the Department of Agriculture, Plant Pest Control Division, which can be contacted in Charleston at 348-2212.
