Last Friday an event passed that
, many of us did not even know about.
. Friday June 27 was National HIV
testing day.
Just as many of us did not know
that this national event was taking
place we may be unaware that we
could be carrying the infection.
According to the Center for Disease
Control one fourth O f the people in
WV whohave HIV is not even aware
ofit.
Some people who suspect they
a may have the virus do not get tested
; because they fear finding i)ut about
• it. This is a common problem that
©
= surfaces when folks face any serious
. health cnsm.
Still others don't have a clue that
they could be infected because they
think they have used Eill the proper
precautions. Using the precautions
',is great but it is not foolproof. The
• .
: only way to know if you are infected
' is to be tested.
: There are other problems that
hinder testing. If people get tested
they are afraid members of the
community who might find out will
., stlgmatlze them.
This is a tw0-fold problem.
1. The community must disregard
" its prejudices and become educated
enough about how their prejudices
.. impact the HIV Victim and how
, those prejudices contribute to the
• spread of the disease.
2. Health care providers needto
• become more diligent with regard to
"confidentiality. People need to be
confident When they test. But the
• truth is in most cases a person can
. test and the results are kept in strict
confidentiality.
The main three groups who are
at risk for HIV infection are: Men
who have sex with other men,
intravenous drug users and people
who have heterosexual sex, but the
virus is spreading fast in other
demographic groups, including
African-Americans and women, the
CDC says.
I was talking to a health care
professional the other night and I
