The actual application of discipline begins with the superintendent when it is made clear that the board will hold the superintendent accountable for a disciplined and business like daily routine in the schools. The superintendent must have pride in the achievements of the system and identify problems and search for working solutions as they exhibit concern for all students. The next group essential to school discipline are the principals because they know the superintendent is holding them accountable and because they are proud of their school and want success. From here every teacher and staff person must impose an expectation for discipline and a business approach in the hallways and especially in the classroom every single day because their principal demands that professionalism from all faculty and staff and because they want to teach and see students achieve. Students must clearly know that disruptive behavior and violation of rules will not be tolerated and that there will always be serious consequences applied on a consistent basis for violations of publicized rules. Yes, there are always mitigating circumstances, but the chain of discipline must not be weakened by favoritism or paybacks. Teachers who are abiding by school policy in their effort to maintain discipline and a learning Every man desires to live long; but no man would be old. ---Jonathan S~f-t Tooth decay is said to be the second most ,common disease in the U.S. after the common cold. to school to learn should not accept the fact that 1 or more students in a class are so continuously disruptive that their child's learning opportunity is infringed upon, Nor should they accept the fact that their child is in a classroom that is more often chaotic than not. This is not happening in all classrooms, but it does happen to a greater or lesser extent in all schools. Let me make the point clear that every situation of weak discipline makes the job more difficult for those who seek a disciplined and effective learning environment. Have you visited your school, teacher, and principal? Are you questioning your child and being politely inquisitive of the administration and teachers about the learning environment? Or better still, visit the school and ask to observe. We all need to be proactive and constructive in an effort Of cooperation to improve schools in spite of the many roadblocks imposed upon our efforts. The WV State Department of Education governs school discipline with Policy 4373. The central point of this policy is that rather than catch and punish rule breakers with suspension from school, we should catch, counsel, and punish in school in order to bring about the desired behavioral changes needed, This sounds good and has merit as we have a responsibility to educate and counsel all students regardless of their actions in school. Principals could then become the instructional leaders they need to be and get into classrooms more frequently in order to he}p teachers improve their craft of teaching and aid in developing the basic skills and objectives of the curriculum. Insanity is continuing to do the same thing and expecting a different result! We are seeing results that we cannot be proud of when it comes to student achievement. The condition of too many instances of poor discipline would be a good place to begin doing something different. Obviously, what we have been doing is not working well. This can be fixed with a strong chain of discipline from top to bottom in our system. Old people like to give good advice, as solace for no longer being able to provide bad examples. ~Francois de La Rochefoucauld *** ~TH DEPARTMENT "; SERVICES Immunization clinics are held , each Monday and Thursday at the Summers County Health Department.
