Letter to the Editor Just Telling It Like It is Dear Editor: I'm no spring chicken but I try to keep my surroundings looking nice. When company is coming I really get busy trying to make things cozier and inviting. I read recently where Summers County is getting someone to promote tourism "Pity the poor souI!" To promote tourism one needs good roads and plenty of good parking. We have the poorest ways to get in and out of our territory that I know of. I don't believe a tourist would enjoy driving through out town. Might loose a hubcap or burst a tire! To get to or come into Hinton from 1-64 we have the curvy Route 20 from Sandstone to Summers Street (one way mind you with traffic parked some places both sides.) To go to or come into Hinton Interstate 77 we have "Death Trap" 20 for 3 or 4 miles. It's ridiculous that the state of West Virginia won't do anything to prevent those boulders from falling into the road from areas around the dam to the Lilly Bridge at least. I have paper work prepared by the Dept. of Highways out of Charleston as to what they propose that needs done. Since this "Hundred's of tires, oil pans, gas tanks and windshields have been bursted or broken. If you have been a victim please let Charleston know about this. I have been begging for the last 3 or 4 years to get this condition corrected. Mr. Lilly has spent more in overtime trying to keep the road open then it wquld cost to "fix it." His hands are tied. He can do no more. Secondly have you looked around recently to the eyesores in the city limits of Hinton? The junk pile near the Pizza Hut, wouldn't you hate to have that near your business? What about the trash dump and weed jungle across from the former Butler Pharmacy. How can anyone get by with such an ugly dangerous situation? The owners certainly have no consideration for their fellow man. Surely someone has the jurisdiction to get these cleaned up. I have a bad situation in front of my home on Park Ave. No one has lived in the house for peeone,as to: force owners tO mow grass in summer:an d rake leaves in the fall. Another situation, I saw a commode setting on a porch on 1st. Ave. IfI was disposing of this I think I'd put a cover over it for the time being. Really looked bad from the main highway. We need first to clean our town up for our "pride" - To draw tourist we need to get the roads improved. Third, we need somebody who can get things done. It takes forever for anything to get completed like the comer across from the Post Office - the bridge with the barrier in the middle, the new welcome center at Sandstone. We need more people like the Jehovah Witness! They built their new church and completed the landscape in 3 or 4 days and did an excellent job. Sincerely, Edith E. Akers Hinton Bobcats Defeat Shady Spring Tigers On Monday, June 16th., the Bobcats defeated the Shady Spring Tigers 37-25 to run their record to 3 3 in the Princeton/Rod Thor Summer League.
