"The Truth Shall Make You Free" (John 8:32) By Fred Seavers Organs and Pianos in Worship? So far, we have noticed there are no occurrences in the Bible, of first century Christians playing on a stringed, etc., instrument in praise to God. We noticed one cannot go back to the Law of Moses to justify the use of various stringed instruments in worship to God, for we no longer follow the Law of Moses, but the Law of Christ-- Galatians 5:4, etc. We noticed it does no good to defend the use of pianos, etc., in worship to God by language evolved, the word "Psallo," translated "making melody (KJV)," began to refer to songs which were sung to, or not to, • the accompaniment of mechanical instruments. Later, in modern Greek, it referred exclusively to singing only-- Bauer, Gingrich, and Danker Greek Lexicon. Some insist this word "Psallo" must still mean pluck or twang as on a stringed instrument. Notice however, that in this verse it was a command to "Psallo," or, "make melody." Therefore, if it demands a stringed instrument, etc., each member must saying, "God didn't say not to use them." play one to fulfill this command of God. We compared this to the situation with Moses and the smiting of the rock -- Numbers 20:1-13. Compare also, Leviticus 10:1-2. We cannot add to, nor take away from the Word of God -- Galatians 1:6-9. Now notice, that some say, "in Ephesians 5:19, the Bible says to sing Psalms, and they were sung to the accompaniment of stringed instruments, etc., Psalm 150." To a point, this is so. The Old Testament Psalms were not always accompanied by mechanical instruments, but often were. Here again, we follow the example of New Testament Christians, not the Old Testament Jews. Some say, "What about the Greek word "Psallo" in Ephesians 5:19? As the Greek Common sense of course, would tell you this is not the case. Even more importantly, if it be an instrument plucked or twanged, notice it was to be done, "In your heart ," not in your hand. We can know theretore, from example and command, that New Testament Christians sang only, and never played. Next week we will notice some verses from Revelation chapters 5; 14; and 19; concerning this same subject.
