DR. JOHN ALEXANDER
Word was received of the sudden
passing of Dr. John Alexander, 186
Park View Terrace, Orange Park,
NJ. 07050.
He was the husband of Mrs. Emma
Lou Tierce Laws, formerly of this
city.
He is survived by his wife, three
sons, three grandsons, one grand-
daughter, other relatives and many
friends.
The body was cremated. Memo-
rial services were held.

Mrs. Ora Grace Deeds, 89, died
Mon. June II, at aHinton care cen-
ter, following a long illness.
Born Oct. 2, 1900, at Jumping
Branch, she was the daughter of the
late Ed and Sally Allen Young.
Mrs. Deeds had lived most of her
life in Summers County, was a
member of the Hinton First United
Methodist Church and the Gleaners
Sunday School class and she was a
former Sunday School teacher at the
Brooklyn United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her
husband, Allen Frank Deeds in 1970
and a daughter, Frances Deeds.
Survivors include three daugh-
ters, Mrs. Kenneth (Carrell) Kin-
caid of Hinton, Mrs. L. M. (Annabell)
Gleason of Clifton Forge, Va., and
Mrs. Jewel (Frankie) Martin of
Beckley; a sister, Mrs. John (Hilda)
Yancey of Hinton, and three grand-
children.
Graveside services and burial
were held Wed. June 13 at 11 a.m. at
the Restwood Memorial Gardens at
Hinton with Dr. Clyde Hensley offi-

home after a long illness.
He was a lifelong resident of

veteran of World War II. He was a

Supply Co., with 23 years' service.
He was a Mason and member of
VFW.

The Alpha Xi Chapter of the Del ta
Kappa Gamma Society International
met at Pipestem State Park on May
12, at 10:00.
The President, Cleo Mathews,
called the meeting to order and
welcomed two members frbm the Xi
Chapter, Anna Laura Waid and Ruby
Holland; and the other guests at the
meeting: Pare Thompson, Marie
Thompson, and Mrs. Arnett Willey.
Rose Mary Irwin was in charge of
the ice breaker, and then the mem-
bers joined in singing "Building
Bridges". Mrs. Mathews read the
challenge to the members "A Little
Parable to Mothers~ by Temple
Bailey. Routine business was trans-
acted.
Lynn Crowder, Second Vice Presi-
dent, was in charge of the initiation
of new members. The following
women wereinitiated: Sarah Brown,
Diane Bryant, Catherine Mack, Pat
Miller, Nancy Seldomridge, and
Betty Jo Williams. Those officers
participating in the initiation in
addition to Mrs. Crowder were Cleo
Mathews, President; Barbara
Parmer, First Vice President; and
Martha Livesay, Secretary. Appro-
priate music was played for the cere-
mony and =The Delta Kappa Gamma
Song~ concluded the ceremonies.
Following the initiation,the offi-
cers for the biennium 1990-1992 were
installed. Those taking office were
Barbara Parmer, President; Cleo
Mathews, First Vi ce President; Lynn
Crowder, Second Vice President;
Martha Liveeay, Secretary; Mary
Lambert, Treasurer; and Connie
Newton, Parliamentarian.
Pat Miller asked the blessing
before the members and guests en-
joyed a salad luncheon.
The members joined in singing
=Problems, Promises and Prospects~
before Barbara Parmer presented
the Founders Day program. Mrs.
Parmer stated that The Delta Kappa
Gamma Society was founded on May
11, 1929 in Austin, Texas by Annie
Webb Blanton. Dr. Blanton chose 11
capable educators with a wide range
of backgrounds to join her in the
formation of this group of key women
teachers. Assisting Mrs. Parmer with
a candlelight ceremony to memoral-
ize the founders were'Anna Laura
Waid, Ruby Holland, Cleo Mathews,
Lynn Crowder, Mary Lambert,
Susan Lawrence, Connie Newton,
Donna lV~ck, Lillian Sims, and
Martha Livesay. Mrs. Parmer con-
cluded the ceremony by reading =In
Commemoration" by Eunah Temple
