BOX 1000 HINTON, WV 25951 Letter To The Editor Does Anyone Recognize Building? THE C & O NORTHERN RAILWAY: Around the turn of the twentieth century the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway began looking for a route to haul their coal through the State of Ohio to the Great Lakes at Toledo, Ohio. During the early years the C&O looked at the Toledo and Ohio Central, the Kanawha and Michi- gan and the Hawking Valley rail- ways as an outlet. These railway companies were jointly owned and controlled by four larger corpora- tions, i.e., the Lake Shore and Michi- gan Southern, the Erie, the Balti- more and Ohio and the Pennsylva- nia Company. About 1909 litigation was in progress attacking the own- ership by these four companies as being in violation of the Hepburn Act. As a result of this litigation, the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern bought control of the Toledo and Ohio. The Chesapeake and Ohio Railway Company bought control of the Hawking Valley. The Kanawha and Michigan was divided equally between the Chesapeake and Ohio and the Michigan Southern. y y plan, too, was abandoned in part. On July 2, 1917 a news release by An agreement was reached with the C&O said in part as follows: the Norfolk and Western Railroad =Trains will be operated over the whereby they would move the C&O trains over their line from Waverly, Ohio to South Columbus and by expending $4,500.000. including funds from the sale of the Kanawha and Michigan to the New York Central, the Limeville bridge and branch line of the Cincinnati Divi- sion known as the C&O Northern was constructed. C&O President George W. Ste- vens sent M.J. Caples to the Hawk- ing Valley at Columbus in 1914 charged with constructing the C&O Northern from Limeville to Waverly but much credit for the success in its building was given to William Michel, Chief Engineer of the Hawk- ing Valley Railroad. The beautiful, great and sturdy bridge spaning the Ohio River at Sciotoville was de- signed and built by Gustave Linden- thal who designed the famous Hell Gate steel arch bridge over the East River in New York. Reunion Held Chesapeake and Ohio Northern, the new subsidiary of the C&O before the end of July. The steel work on the new bridge which spans the Ohio River at Sciotoville, above Portsmouth, was completed last week. This week work will be started on placing the steel approaches on the Ohio side. This will require but a few days. =Work on the roadbed was also completed last week from Siotoville Northward and the other from Glen jean Southward were connected last Thursday. This completes the work on the road bed with the excep- tion of a small amount of ditch work." The C&O later completed build- ing its line from Waverly to Colum- bus and in 1930 bought outright the entire stock of the Hawking Valley and, over the years, has proven to be a very important part of the C. & O. Allergic Reactions to Insect Bites & Stings Bites and songs from insects such as ants, wasps, yellow jack- ets, hornets, and bees are more common during summer months. For most individuals, bites and stings arc painful but unev ful. However. for many of the'q'dore than one million people who are allergic to insect venom, a single bite or sting can be fatal. Prevention: Tight fitting clothes can prevent insects from getting between the material and the skin. Light-colored clothing (e.g.,white or light khaki) has been found to be less attractive to bees. Persons with known allergies should avoid scented soap, perfume, suntan lo- tion, and bright, shiny jewelry. When outdoors, wear long-sleeved shirts, a hat, and socks and shoes (not sandals). Use an insect repel- lant before going outdoors. Spray garbage cans with an insecticide. Keep food stored properly to pre- vent ants from congregating. Treatment: Pain and itching may be controlled with ice packs or one of several topical products con- mining a local anesthetic. When individuals with known allergies are stung, they should keep the amount of venom in the blood low by removing the stinger and wrap- ping a fie around the arm or leg above the sting. Get to a hospital or physician's office as soon as pos- sible. p~ P, N D ci S( fr ri May 30, 1990 Dear Editor: Thanks for the story on Speedy Krise. He played wonderful music.
