A Fitting Memorial
The Grafton National
Veterans Cemetery in
Taylor County has been
closed to burials for more
" than twenty years for lack
of space, a situation that
has moved West Virginia's
veterans to join together in
an effort to provide an-
other national veterans
cemetery in our state.
-' The years of hard
w!Srk on that project by
West Virginia's veterans
and by officials in the
• federal and state govern-
ments were rewarded re-
ently when the head of the
Veterans Administration
promised that his agency
would "move as quickly as
possible" to provide new
national veterans burial
space in West Virginia.
West Virginia veterans
received that promise from
VA Chief Harry Waiters
during a meeting in my
Capitol office, which was
also attended by U.S. Sen.
Jennings Randolph and
Pep. Alan Mollohan of
West Virginia's First Con-
gressional District, in
which the cemetery is
located.
Waiters pledged dur-
ing the meeting that the
$1.75 million in the fiscal
1984 budget, that l was
successful in designating
for the expansion of na-
tional veterans cemetery
space in West Virginia,
would not be diverted to
any other project, but
would, in fact, be used in
West Virginia.
The VA Administra-
tor also made clear during
our meeting that for the
VA to go forward with the
West Virginia project, land
suitable for burial purposes
must be donated to the
VA.
Waiters told the West
Virginia veterans that the
VA would study a plot of
state-owned land near
Pruntytown -- only a few
miles from the existing
Grafton Cemetery -- to
determine its suitability for
cemetery use. West Vir-
ginia Gov. Jay Rockefeller
has already offered to
donate that land for a vet-
erans cemetery.
The VA's recent
pledge to work together
with West Virginia's vet-
erans and with members of
the Congressional delega-
tion to achfeve the goal of
a new veterans cemetery
for West Virginia will allow
us to continue our efforts
on both the state and fed-
eral levels to make the new
site a reality.
A new national veter-
ans cemetery for West Vir-
ginia will be an appropriate
and fitting memorial to the
sacrifices West Virginia's
veterans have made for
their country.

The Library has been quiet during the past week. The Library
Board and Friends g roup are scratching their collective heads
wondering were to turn next for our local funding. Our young
patrons are busy with end of school activities. The Older ones with
their g ardens. The most popular books this time of year are those
that g ive recipes for strawberry jam! This will all change by
next week when our summer reading program starts! We are
working hard to g et everything ready. If this year's program is
as successful as those in the past we should be very busy for the
next few months! ........
We do have some new books to tempt you in out of the sunshine.
The reference shelves now contain up - to - date copies of the' G
ninne~ Book of World Records - it's always one of our most
popular books. Along the same lines we have The Complete Book
o( the Olympios with " the final results of every olympic event
since 1896" as well as " fascinating, dramatic and biz-
arre stories from Olympic history". On a more practical level (
especially as haying season approaches) we have Tractor land
8mall Engine Maintenance which is full of g end ad-
vice and pictures of clean, rust free equipment with nuts that
easily unscrew, etc. - Sigh l I'm never able tog et the nuts loose.
Fo~4~e traveler we have Frommer's Europe on $25 a day and
for tho~ who stay home and need entertainment we have several
new novels. The most interesting among ll~em is Joe Com-
mer's The Decatur Road " a novel of the Appalachian Hill
Country". There is a new science fiction - More,o: Drngadady
of Peru by Anne M~,affrey. We also have - The Summoning by
Revert Towers, an author who has been compared and classed
with " Flanuery O' Conner, Walker Percy and other Southern
writers who know that the ultimate suspense mystery takes place
in the soul." It takes a special kind of reader to enjoy this type of
book but those who do are avid!
