When leaves of vegetables such as beans, bro- ccoli, and others become curled or distorted, look on the under- sides of the leaves, and you will probably find an infestation of aphids. New growth is a favorite spot for aphids to accumulate. They suck sap and cause the foli- age to curl and growth is stunted. Honeydew is a sweet sugary sap excreted by aphids, and it is attractive to ants and other insects. A black sooty mold also grows on the honey- dew and makes an unsightly mess. The insecticides Malathion and Diazinon are very effect- ive against aphids. Be sure to apply a good thorough applic- ation, and be ready to repeat in 10-14 days. Follow instructions as prescribed on the iable of insecticide container. ..POTATO LEAF HOPPERS ++Damage to potatoes by leaf hoppers is beginning to show up. upancy in April showed nearly 100 per cent increase. Sales Supervisor, Fran Ryan, reports that more than 48 bus tours, mostly senior citizens, from Michigan, Cincinnati, Maryland and Washington, D.C. have been booked to visit the park, and additional bookings are expected for the fall months. Each bus tour will bring 45 to 50 visitors. Bookings indicate that the park's overnight trail rides can as the top of Pilot Knob peeps out of the haze to res- emble a tiny island. The trail riders usually see deer, occassional turkeys, many birds and other fur bear- ing animals, so most carry cameras as they pass many visits. The return trip is made by a different route that is just as scenic as the first one. About Your Social Security People who are eligible for Medicare benefits should not wait until they get sick before they read their Medicare hand- book. The Medicare handbook is a handy little booklet that pro- vides information on all aspects of the Medicare program. It is simple, easy to read, and an- swers most of the commonly asked questions about the pro- gram. Medicare is available to people who are 65 or over,, or who have been receiving social security disability benefits for two years or more, or who are suffering from permanent kid- ney failure and need dialysis or a transplant. Medicare has two parts. Hos- pital insurance helps pay for hospital care and certain foil- Many people confuse leaf hop- ow up care after a hospital stay. Medical insurance helps pay doctor bills, outpatient hospit- al care, and for other items and services not covered by hospital insurance. Reading "Your Medicare Handbook" ahead of time helps assure that you know how the program can help you. This is important because Medicare does not cover everything and some services that are cover- ed may be covered on a lira- Red basis. You need to know what Medicare can and cannot pay for. Some people risk losing mon- ey by not taking the time to read their Medicare handbook bef- orehand. A typical example is that of Mrs. Jane Q. treated for a broken leg at a Canadian hospital while on a ski trip in per burn with blight. Leaf hopper burn shows up as brown- ing on the tips and edges of the new leaves. The leaves also become twisted and curled. The insecticides Malathion and Dia- zinon are effective in controll- ing leaf hoppers also. • .SOD WEBWORMS AND CHINCH BUGS++ Mid- June is the time to treat with in- secticides to control chinch bugs and sod webworms in lawns. Materials to use include Dursban, Diazinon, Spectrac- ide, Ethion, Trithlon, Sevin or Aspon. After applying the in- secticide, water it in. For web- worm control, it is recommend- ed that the insecticide be app- lied in late afternoon and de- lay wat-ing in until the next mol'nill. The 66- year-old ski buff thought that Medicare did not pay for care in hospitals outside the country, so she didn't bother to submit a claim for reimbursement. Later a friend told her that there's an exception to the rule for Canadian and Mexican hos- pitals providing emergency care as the closest medical facility. Another example is that of Mr. Johnny D., who , be- cause he had few medical bills, let them pile up over three years before he submitted them for reimbursement. When he did /"de it was too late.
