June 19, 1979 Hinton News--3 Tournament Set Ever have a common-sense idea about how to do an ever- yday chore easier or faster? Many would-be inventors hope their bright ideas will be worth millions. Some pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to invent- ion marketing firms assuming the firm can help them pat- ent their inventions. But the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office notes that only patent attorneys and ag- ents ( non- lawyers) register- ed with their office are per- mitred by law to represent inventors before the Patent Off- ice. So you should find out if a particular firm is so registered before purchasing their servi- ces. The Patent Office can't recommend a particular patent attorney or agent, but it does publish a directory of those registered and available for new clients. For information on this directory and the full story on patents, get a copy of Gen- eral Information Concerning Patents. Send $1.80 to the Con- sumer /-€' Center, Dept., lgG, Pueblo, Colorado 81009. The Constitution provides for patents, and the Patent Ofic- e's history dates back to 1790. Patents protect !'any new or useful process, machine, manu- facturer, ... or any new or useful inprovements thereof" accord- ing to the law. The key concept in patents is novelty. Generally, the invent- ion must not have been used or described before in the United States. No patentables are sm- all advances such as changes in size and color or any develo- pments obvious to anyone fam- iliar with the technology of a particular field. Patents are granted for act- ual processes or devices, not merely the idea or suggestion of possible new inventions. Once a mteint is granted, it excludes others from making, using, or selling the invention in the U.S. for 17 years. May "home" inventors are disappointed to find that their idea is already patented. But it's smart to find this out first from a reliable source such as a patent att- orney or agent before wasting thousands of dollars on efforts to develop and market your idea. When you order a copy of General Information Concern- ing Patents ($1.80), you'll also receive a copy of the free Con- sumer Information Catalog. It lists more than 200 selected free or low- cost publications from the federal government. The Catalog is published quarterly by the Consumer iNformation Center of the General Services 'administration.
