Pictured James Kincaid and Shawn Leedom The Summers Street mini park Summers County High School has undergone some changewitkin- adopted the park as their ,the lt month. :Te Jofr, West, gotmtseice :rojeot this Virginia Graduates students at spr!ng, The Family Resource Tues. June 15. 1999 Hinton New= - 7 Center's Y.E.S. Project, led by Amy Richmond, initially began the park cleanup in 1997 and the JWVG students desired to continue the improvements. Valerie Pack, JWVG specialist, and sixteen of her students volunteered for two weeks to beautify the park. They began collecting and disposing of 26 bags of garbage and various pieces of debris from the area. They painted the basketball court fence and playground equipment as well as mulching and planting flowers throughout the park. The students erected a fence to shield younger children from a steep incline, trimmed excessive branches, cleared poison ivy and repaired equipment as needed. Brian Boyle, Youth Activities Director for the Child Advocate Center, was inspired by the volunteerism and has spearheaded a group to repaint the basketball court and place a barbecue grill at the park. The JWVG students who participated in the cleanup were: Michael Kesner, Donna Adkins, Jennifer Adkins, Kevin Adkins, Scott Burnett, Scott Garten, John Grimmett, Melissa Hicks, Meliesa Huffman, James Kincaid, Shawn Leedom, Andrea Mansfield, Heather Meadows, Charles Ward, Troy Williams and Donnie Zimmerman. Valerie and her students would like to thank many others who assisted in this project, including Mayor Leslie and the City Council for allotting $750.00 for the cleanup and Cindy Cooper, who managed the business aspect. They appreciate the Hinton City Street Department, comprised of Ralph Trout, Elvin Wynes, Donald Adkins, Mike Ward, Bobby Parker and Ed Thomas, for donating their tools and disposing of the waste generated by the clean- up. They would also like to thank Floyd Tidkle for donating the mulch, Norman Farley and Jim Bob Lilly for lending their tools and Richard Mansfield for donating the sand. The project could not have been completed without the help of two Summers County citizens, William Kesner and Tim O'Farrell. They volunteered several days to assist the students by donating supplies, loading tools, transporting equipment and sarong a# fDremext, of the project. The mini park clean up was definitely a community effort lllllllllllll I and an exemplary act of volunteerism from all those who were involved. Sadly, the mini park has already experienced some vandalism and the JWVG students would like to appeal to the residents of Summers County to take pride in their community. They ask that residents help keep the park and the rest of Summers County pleasing to the eye, spirit and senses.
