Presents
Program
On June 3rd., Carol Jones
presented information to the
Summers County Library Staff on
Mental Illnesses. Carol volunteers
with the National Alliance on
Mental Illness and is on the Board
of Directors with the Charleston
Affiliate. These presentations are
part of the "Campaign to End
Discrimination" against persons
who suffer from these devastating
illnesses.
Why do these chemical
imbalances occur? Genetic factors
seem to be important but are not the
only reason, which means that
environment also plays a part. In the
past, various kinds of family
influences were thought to cause
schizophrenia, but recent studies
have failed to prove any
environmental factors common in
the lives of individuals who later
developed schizophrenia. Families
can cease blaming themselves for
the usual ups and downs of family
life; they do not cause this illness.
Although the cause is unknown,
this does not mean that the disease
cannot be treated. Most people with
schizophrenia improve significantly
with medication and rehabilitation.
For more information on these
illnesses, please call Ms. Jones (304)
445-7608 and schedule a
presentation for your group. Theme
presentations are FREE.
