LOAVES AND FISHES Excitement is building for the 30th anniversary of Catholic Charities West Virginia's Loaves & Fishes summer youth camp. The camp experience provides a safe and supportive summer camp environment for local Summer's County youth that might not otherwise be able to attend camp. It's al~o an opportunity for children to feel valued and appreciated, and experience fun activities throughout the week Our collaboration with Loyola Academy in Wilmette, Illinois, has continued for over a decade. Sixty counselors and adults have volunteered their time year after year to ensure the children receive support to increase their self worth, and develop a positive self- image. When camp ends each year, counselors often share heart felt stories. One counselor recalled the growth she observed in her camper, from someone who would not interact or participate, to someone who made friends and enjoyed the activities. Another shared the sense of accomplishment felt by both the camper and counselor when they read together for the talent show. Activities offered during the week- long camp include canoeing, archery, swimming, camp fires, crafts, and special evening entertainment. A Jr. Counselor program was implemented several years ago to allow past campers to remain involved and give back to the community. Camp is offered free of charge for about 95% of our campers, who are eligible for free reduced lunches at school. Local donors are invited to join us for a celebration and pizza party at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 29, at the 4-H Camp on Barger Springs Road in Hinton. They will have an opportunity to interact with the campers, and see the difference their donations have made in their lives. Pictures from past camps will be on display, and co-founders, Michael Vincent and Jane Duffield will join us. Anyone wishing to help sponsor a child can send their donation to Catholic Charities West Virginia, P.O. Box 386, Princeton, WV 24740, or contact Southern Regional Director, Carol Bailey at 304-425-4306.
